I have been geeking around the different stats and he is very comparable with Rodrygo - difference in styles of play, Rodrygo has higher passing succes rates, Nico is better in the air and high pressing + he plays with higher risk (more take-ons) whilst Rodrygo has a higher succes rate in take-ons but has less of these overall.

Nico's stats are very interesting considering the claim from many that his output is somewhat mediocre:

A goal contribution (goal or assist) for every 159 minutes played is decent, considering he will likely only improve on these (age, experince and style of play at Barca with many more chances created compared to Bilbao)

When looking solely at his performances for the NT the numbers are even better:

A goal contribution every 132 minutes played. If he can make perform same results in Barca, this would translate to 26 G+A next year in La Liga alone (where he to play every single minute and maintaining the same output as he does for the NT)

It's hard to see this happening with paying the release clause, I don't think we have money and we won't have any major sales so we won't get it either. Our biggest hope is that Athletic accepts negotiating a payment schedule but why would they? Maybe if Nico made a deal with them last summer to stay and they let him leave now? Athletic will 99% refuse to negotiate either way and it's hard to see Tebas letting us paying clauses for Garcia and Nico with combined 90 mil € in one payment without any major sales or levers.

Hope we'll sign him even though he has flaws but he's the best option out there with the highest long term ceiling. The positive is that it seems there is a real wish from both sides to make this happen this year but without Athletic and Tebas that is meaningless.

There are two players you can buy. Both for around the same price.

Player A

Averages 9 g/a per league season.
Doesn't bring anything that the team is severely lacking.
Is not good enough to currently get in our first Xi.
Could potentially be fitted in by having to move our LW ( where he as just had his best season ever by a country mile ) to a false 9 position which he has never played before.

Player B

Averages 9 g/a per calendar MONTH.
Brings direct free kick ability that the team desperately needs.
Improves our first Xi significantly.
Lets all other players stay in their preferred position which made Barca the highest scoring team in Europe last season.

Difficulty choice isn't it. :biden:

There are aspects to a partnership with Lamine most are overlooking with the potential addition of Nico - our biggest club legends had an on pitch connection that was so innate, art was produced. Combined with NT continuity in their partnership, their electric on pitch chemistry considering how unique Lamine is already will surely translate into something special

I always go back to Leo & Dani even before MSN or Xavi/Iniesta, that connection that developed between WC talents can great something unique that could never be achieved individually

Is Nico Williams a world class player though?

Good post. Bilbao can make a very serious run (for them) into the Champions League with Nico. A good draw and they can make the knockouts like Villa did.

That would be financially better for them than selling Nico and bombing ala Girona. Nico release clause will still be paid next Summer, while they would have a whole season to convince Nico to renew and slightly increase the release clause to 70-80m range.

Meanwhile if they bomb out even with Nico, they can also be open to Nico leaving in Winter market when the market of desperate buyers open. Check City and PSG this past winter.

I think he only comes if he pushes for a move and we have cap space, as you say. In normal circumstances, a sub 100m transfer window for a club with the revenues of Barcelona (Joan + Nico) or Madrid, would be chicken feed.

It's not just about CL, it's how Athletic (rightfully) works. They have a limited pool of players and will want to hold on to the best if they can. He won't push Athletic and he shouldn't, that's his club.

The only option is that Laporta gathers the money for full clause and Tebas allows it, I don't see that happening without a major sale (which won't happen as it looks now).

There is no player A or player B dilemma. In ideal world we send Lewy to Tractor FC where he belongs and buy both.

If what Khaled said about registration rules changing in la Liga is correct, then registration shouldn't be an issue.

Securing the loan to sign him also be an issue.

So why is Garcia deal not secured yet? And Nico might be the same issue.
