21 - Frenkie de Jong

Horatio

You're welcome
Executing role given to him to a tee.

Let’s not kid ourselves. Frenkie is most talented passer in team.

If want to see more through balls and breaking lines Flick needs to instruct him to put more risk in his game.

Frenkie played well vs. Inter

People talking about an upgrade. Can I ask who you guys have in mind? And please don't say Gavi because there is no chance he'll start over de Jong given his form over the last few months. No manager would start Gavi over Frenkie.

Be serious.

A systemic upgrade. We have no DM.

Quality wise I am fine with him (just prefer Pedri if it comes to that).

Edit: Not sure we need to touch our midfield though... Frenkie, Casado, Bernal, Gavi, Eric, Pedri, Olmo + Fermin looks decent. One physical box to box would be nice probably.

Any window to replace him as sailed, we are stuck with him until bernal becomes good enough to replace him.

Should have done it all those years I told them to.

Which means a DM with little impact in the defensive side of the game and we don't need to say much about his offensive contribution.

He will recycle possession for a few more years and give us solid to good performances.

Will be truly stunned if us or the Dutch win a CL/Euros/WC with him as well the starting DM

The problem with him is that he has no x factor. He is no Busquets, no Yaya Toure, no Mascherano (even if he played only a couple games as a DM here). He is solid, but he can't be the focal point DM that barca was so used to in the past. Heck I think even Edmilson was more threatening than him in attack.

It does worry me too that we are sorta stuck with him. Problem is there is not many better available DM's than him out there. I wouldn't mind someone like Enzo Fernandez who I think would do wonders in this super risky attack setup of Flick with his defensive abilities.

Yea that's always been my feeling about him.

He's good, but just missing something.

Frankie benefits from this system without a classic DM. Hard to replace him as he has the stamina, technique, passing and solid intercepting ability. All important for this position.

He does come in a bit weak and losses some duels but those will happen to anyone. Ideally we have a tall guy with good header, great stamina, tackling and yet to have vision and ball control of a great midfielder. Don't see where we find that.

I came to appreciate Frenkie more in recent months.

Barca were extremely lucky for a long with some positions like CDM, striker & wingers. With the exception of few years we had some world class players there. Other positions like GK not so much luck.

We can't keep comparing with the past, we have to look forward and deal with the reality. You can always compensate if a historically good position by adding a player in a other ones.

It is one of the reasons I actually want upgrade in GK, because we aren't going to have the usual strengths we historically had.
