1 - Marc-Andre ter Stegen

Messi was non-existent, and nobody would ever hold these losses against him for the same reason as Ter Stegen.

You think you are getting away with BS like this?

No shame at all mentioning Messi and Stegen in the same sentence.

One blunders for the 2nd goal and doesn't organize his defense for the 4th.

The other is a 1 an army winning the first leg on his own and creating chances left and right in the 2nd leg.

His shenanigans aside:

He wasn't a bum in his prime, but not a hero or a GOAT goalkeeper either.

He had an awesome 2022-23 season and a good CL run in 2015.

For the rest of his 8 seasons here, there's not much to give him a hero or GOAT label.
In the history of FC Barcelona? Of course he is in contention for greatest GK we ever had. Whether you like him or not.

By the numbers, since serghei knows a bit of math too, he is one of the greatest buys this clubs has made in the modern era. 12mil as transfer fee and a salary which was never high(always outside of top5/10 paid GKs) for a GK that was always in top 5 or top 10 in the world(depending of form) is a steal. Whether you like him or not.

But I see many people in here comparing him to legends of the game and throwing tantrums that Stegen wasn't at that level.

Lol, he's 3rd best out of the 3 starting keepers we had in the last 20 years. Soon to be 4th if Garcia is as good as the club thinks he is.

Valdes and Bravo are well ahead. Bravo captained Chile to 2 historic Copa America wins ffs.

Valdes had prime Barca in front of him all those years. Otherwise had lots of mistakes in him. But time flies and we forget.

Bravo I wont even look at. Wtf does captaining Chile in Copa America have to do with his Barca career?

Ter Stegen won our first LL post Messi while being the best player in the league that season. When did Valdes ever had to shoulder the team like that?

Anyway, it's between Valdes and Stegen when it comes to GOAT Barca GK. Who do you prefer is your own choice.

Stegen carried La Liga during Xavi's winning season for sure, along with RM having one of their worst seasons in a decade. He's been largely average otherwise though, while failing to show up in the biggest games countless times.

Stegen was good overall. But he was not, or rather never was, the type of goalkeeper who had world class match winning saves in him. Be it lack of height, lack of agility, lack of reflexes, an inability to keep his eyes open or all of them merged together in a tightly wrapped package of Scheiße.

His last great renaissance was that Xavi league winning season. Lower block defence, more defensive coverage, but overall he was splended. In Europe? Not so much.

Doesn't matter much now really, he is old, he is broken down through injuries and if everyone is honest with themselves, especially MaTS, now not at the level that his wages are printed on. It is what it is.

Club could have handled it better, you can't be relying on Stegen being shelved by an unplanned back surgery to register his replacement. That's amateur hour at the comedy club stuff. If we are so bone dry, then don't re-register Woj, keep Pena as back-up and then tell Stegen that we support his surgery but we need to de-register him while he is recovering for the first half season.

Talking about amateur hour at the comedy club. Why did the chicken cross the goal?

Because Stegen was there and it knew he wouldn't stop him.

Yup, one of the best seasons by a GK in LL's history.

Ah GK. Ok. Wasn't that season Lewandowski lead scorer of the league? That must have played a big part also. Wasn't our defense the best at stopping the opponent from creating big chances? Yes it was. Many factors there. Including Raphinha's clutch goal contributions in 2nd part of the season in all those close wins.

Does Stegen also get the biggest contribution for us going out early in CL, in the groups? One of the worst CL results in the last 20 years?

League MVP. Best player overall, not just GK.

Nobody were good in our biggest humaliations in UCL against Roma (away), Bayern (away) or Liverpool (away).

The whole team were terrible, not just Ter Stegen. Football is after all a collective sport.

Messi was non-existent, and nobody would ever hold these losses against him for the same reason as Ter Stegen.

Ter Stegen in our lowest moments was often our 2nd best player. In 2018-19 season, Messi and Ter Stegen almost single handedly won the treble by themselves, Messi carrying the attack and MATS being literally the whole defense.
Vidal and especially Messi can keep their heads high after Anfield.

Very little in 10 years at the club. Not a single noteworthy campaign in European competitions where he made a difference. Some bad seasons in the league also, with 2-3 good but not elite domestic years.
