A local poll done by a Bulgarian sports site:

Do you approve the formation of the ESL?

78,49% - No

12,90% - Yes

4,30% - Will ruin the game

4,30% - Don't care

I believe the backlash from fans is similar throughout Europe.

Seen a Slovenian poll also.

78% No
22% Yes

The backlash should be massive.

We, along with other groups involved in flags, will be removing our flags from The Kop. We feel we can no longer give our support to a club which puts financial greed above integrity of the game.

On Monday morning, Borussia Dortmund's CEO, Hans-Joachim Watzke, took a position on the discussion about the introduction of a European Super League.

"The members of the board of the European Club Association (ECA) got together for a virtual conference on Sunday evening and confirmed that the board decision of last Friday is still valid," said Watzke and added: "This decision means that the clubs want to implement the planned reform of the UEFA Champions League. It was the clear opinion of the members of the ECA board that the plans to found a Super League were rejected. "

Watzke also emphasizes that "both German clubs that are represented on the ECA Board, FC Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, represented 100 percent congruent views in all discussions".

Some voice in the back of my head tells me things can change quickly at some point, but I am digging the fact that Aki Watzke came out publicly doubling down that Bayern and BVB do not and will not join the ESL.

Also Rummenigge a few months ago:

"We believe that a Super League is not football's solution. We believe a Super League will make the top of the game even more dominant. And that cannot be in the interests of football"

"We have no interest in a Super League being installed. Nor do we ever plan to participate in such a thing."

what do those countries have to do with an elite club competition? how many times did a bulgarian, slovenian or romanian club reach the CL groups in the past 10 years? EL is their bread and butter anyway.

As many people have said, UEFA,the EPL and La Liga crying is hypocritical.

Money makes the world go round sadly and they know it.They are just mad they are not going to get a big share from it and that their product will lose its value.

UEFA changed the Champion’s Cup format to the UCL.Was it fair for smaller teams in most countries from Europe? Why does 4th placed Arsenal deserve the place + the MONEY more than them? In time, the rich and the famous became richer and more famous, while the poor cannot realistically compete against them.

As for the EPL and La Liga to a lesser extent,it was easy and justified when they grabbed most of the talents and obtained those massive TV and advertisement deals...Yeah sure,a team from Belgium or Greece can seriously compete against the EPL giants.

As hypocritical as it gets

What do Arsenal have to do with an Elite competition. They are a joke club that will end up between 9-11th at the English League.

Indeed but SL is even more to that direction. So it does not solve these problems but making them even greater

Cl itself and bosman arrest already put us on this trajectory. Globalization and internet accelerated it while covid presented the right opportunity.
But Leicester winning epl or Ajax kids cl definitly didnt help in that regard.
Its not about sport, underdogs and fans anymore but about billionaires getting richer with fans replaced by customers.
Its pure greed.
There is nobody to root for from our perspectives.
Uefa set the example themselves amd are bad as well allthough perhaps its the lesser pof evils.
Still wrong way to go.

IMO it's very important to differentiate between 2 separate aspects:

1) The many-games format
It is true that UCL format has not been very exciting the last many years.
A change is needed and that is reflected in the European Super League Format.
But UEFA has accepted that and is proposing a new model as well starting 2024.

2) The 'closed club' format
This is where the European Super League idea is unacceptable...
Closed club means that however shite a team is in the local league, they will have an assured spot there, and any team that rises can NOT have a place there.

10 years ago City, PSG would not have been there
20 years ago Chelsea would not have been there

Likewise, Valencia and Deportive in the late 90s early 00s were where Atleti is atm. Why Atleti and not them?
If Depor becomes great again, why foreclose the possibility and close the top European competitions doors to them?

It is utterly unacceptable.

Some of these 'super' clubs have won fuck all in Europe, clubs like Spurs, Arsenal qualifying every year despite being nowhere close to winning their league and in Arsenal's case not getting top 4.
This is my biggest issue with this format.

That is not correct.

There would be places available for clubs to qualify just limited.

We getting that Haaland money.

Visca Barca!

With 3.5bn guaranteed to every club, Haaland's price just went over 1bn. These are market rules. Just like every club on the planet knew we had 222m in the bank after Neymar.
