The highest priority need currently is a LCB, everyone knows this - including the market. We were never ultimately in position to sign even a temporary stopgap measure to fortify central defense that fit within the FFP limitations & Flick’s approval. We know that move is heading to a summer discussion when presumably the 1:1 will finally be in effect
Cancelo is a low risk addition that can be high reward despite his defensive lapse risk. If we are to believe Flick initially counted on the player when getting the job and now ultimately gave the green light for this short term trial then he has a plan for how best to use him. THAT, for me, is all that matters ultimately since the FFP & team chemistry are not impacted
I find it nice to see him return, I liked him when he was here despite his limitations but its a very minor move that maybe proves to give us genius depth in business end of season…there’s still 25 days left in the transfer window too
I also wouldn’t read too much into his age or the situation at Al Hilal and not being registered for rest of season, Saudis have money to burn - the league has rules limiting number of foreign players & Inzaghi opted for Nunez as a goalscorer. Plus, you have to wonder if there was a wink wink deal for FFP btwn Inter & Inzaghi with Saudis since there was an agreement already in place with Inter that was linked to Acerbi & De Vrij moving the other way to shed FFP wages
