11 - Raphinha

Gave an interview to Mundo Deportivo, worth a read: https://www.mundodeportivo.com/us/e...ha-i-m-not-worried-about-the-competition.html

A few quotes I liked:

Deco has played an important role in your career.

A huge one. We’ve worked together since my final year in Brazil. He helped bring me to Europe. [...] We always talked about Barça, even when it seemed out of reach. He believed in me and helped me take each step to get here. He helped me achieve my dreams.

And Hansi Flick?

First of all, Flick made me feel important again—at a time when I felt more out than in. I’ve always worked this way, but he helped me explode. A coach’s trust means everything. He changed my career. This has been the best season of my life.

And this banger:

There’s talk of the club bringing in new competition this summer. Are you worried?

Not at all. Given the importance I’ve had this season, I won’t say I’m untouchable, but anyone who comes will have to work harder than I do. What matters to me is that whoever joins works hard and helps the team. The more top-level, committed players we have, the better. Then it’s normal for everyone to fight for their place.

Flick is never going to sub him when he looks like the most likely player to score in the team like Xavi did. Flick basically never subbed him except to rest him.

Xavi simply fecked up with him. The player he subbed often scored 3 goals vs Inter in CL quarters last season and basically proved him wrong.

By the time Xavi realized Raphinha was very valuable to the team... it was too late, too much animosity between the player and the manager had built by then due to Xavi's chaotic subbing decisions. You never sub players who are always with the head in the game and are fitness beasts. Even in min 90 such a player can bang a goal and save you points.

You're welcome
so he'll be back to making a scene anytime he's subbed off for rashford or whoever

It depends. He felt misused by Xavi.
Raphinha is very “fair”. If he plays poorly he will take it on the chin and accept the sub

Read my psycho-analysis a few pages back.

He is truly a leader.
This is exactly what I want from my captain.

TerStegan should understand this.

He was missused by Xavi. People hinted at his high productivity per 90 mins under Xavi as well. He won Xavi the league in 2023 with his clutch goals and assists after Dembele injury.

He is not individually different under Flick, just plays more, in a better system, and has the manager's trust. Raphinha is largely the same player he was when he came, just more adapted to Barcelona and playing for a manager that trusts and values him more. That's why his performances are hitting a peak. Not because he suddenly obtained qualities he didn't have before. Clutchness, end product, effort, mentality, all were there, but Xavi misused them or didn't value them enough.

Of course, it helps that Flick's brand of football is far more in his lane than Xavi's style was.

there is not top 5, Ligue 1 is at the level of the scottish league , PSG won the title 2 months ago, scoring in Ligue 1 should be worth like scoring in the portuguese league for the golden boots.
