21 - Frenkie de Jong

Laporta has given far worse contracts out that FDJ on 15m a season and as stated that contract signed under Barto helped Laporta in those first few seasons.

Giving huge contracts to Lewa/Gundo and Inigo with little back at end of them creates problems later down the line and then have likes of Fati on 12m a season.

Salaries are generally speaking pretty well kept now, bar one or two.

As it relates to de jong, no one takes a pay cut, so it's understandable he will want more than he's making now, whatever that number is.

The question is should be renew him given him and olmo are the two easiest players to replace in the XI, with players that are already in the squad.

Personally given we don't know how bernal will turn out, I think we should renew him.

But if bernal is as good as expected, it's going to get sticky in 2 years and he's not the type to willingly leave based on past experience and having a high earner sitting on the bench isn't the ideal situation.

Would be better to have bernal and casado in two years, both will probably be earning less than him combined.

But that's a future problem, for now it's best to renew him and some may not like it, but he'll get more money than he's currently on, just ask yourself would you take a pay cut at your job?.

There is no one in the squad that can easily replace FDJ or he would be away.

That is not some revolutionary thought.

Frenkie stayed in past as knew he was easily better than likes of Gavi and would start and Busquets was soon to be out the door.

If others over take him he would leave most likely. Would get similar money elsewhere and walk into a top side.

We continue to trim down on this, but as a competitive club with the best young players in game it perfectly logical to have a high wage bill. What was not functional was the wage to income imbalance by the board's predecessors (73% at its peak) with the goal closer to 55% now

They literally have had no choice but to trim the salary bill if want to sign a number of players.

The players they have inherited in La Masia and likes of Pedri being there have massively aided in this also.

That mid 400's is where we want to stay in a perfect world.

Lewa leaving will free up a lot of cap room to sign renewals and new players without increasing the salary cap too much.

Even though most renewals are already done.

Lewa leaving only frees up FFP space if Barca are in 1:1.

They wont just get freed up FFP space from his contract expiring and not 1: but would make it easier to get to that and potentially gain more from sale/renewal of others.

In four years he will be 32. Probably still good.

I know players are playing longer, and midfielders tend to be the fittest of the lot, but it's a very demanding position. Anything longer than four would be a mistake and lack long-term planning, imo.

Not a reflection on the player, just his age as a player.

One thing is certain, and it translates to most players: for a club so deep in debt, Barca seem to spend way too much on wages.
That's true, but the problem is you cannot remain competitive for incomings without being a big wage giver. It's a lose-lose situation in that sense.

Barca are lucky that La Masia is so fruitful, though.

Sort of except it has a catch 22 where these young La Masia guys get so good so fast they get high wages before they really should.

Fati for example
Yamal recently

I didn't mean just because of his age but mostly because of the situation with Gavi, Casado and specially Bernal. If Bernal become the real deal we could find ourselves in a situation where we're gonna have one of most expenive players on the bench and we know Frenkie isn't likely to agree for a transfer elsewhere. I hope that happen but it's easier to deal with it if Frenkie has a shorter contract but I doubt anyone in the club thinks so longterm. They'll probably just give him a 6 years contract because that is the best for FFP in this moment.
