Most Overrated Player in the Modern Era

You are being wildly charitable by including him in your top10 of all time.

I mean amongst the younger generations he is rated above Maradona and R9, let alone Romario and Van Basten. Absolutely mental.

The fact that people think you are some sort of freak with no ball knowledge if he isn't in your top 10 of all time, just shows how overrated he is.
I wrote he is maybe a top 10 or something. I'm not placing him in my mind in a specific spot and Messi, Maradona and Pele being first, second and third for me.

Younger generations are easily sweyed by media and marketing manipulation tactics and also when it comes to Madrid's success in Europe in the last years before VAR was introduced. In the last 5 years without VAR Madrid "won" 4 out of 5 CL's while in the first 5 years with VAR system they've only won 1 CL, the 2022 one, which imo was the luckiest CL ever won much above Chelsea 2012 or others. With this in mind BdO's were easily coming to Cristiano which wasn't based upon merit though he played really well in some of those years.

He is the most overrated player I've ever seen.

He has a better and longer careers than all of them. Your argument is based on claims of shit like "natural talent"(irrelevant and immeasurable) and eye test(totally subjective).

On what metrics are R9, Romario and Van Basten above CR7? I know with Maradona, you will say he peaked higher, which he did but then Maradona peaked higher than Messi too. If you try and dare to compare Messi's 2022 WC campaign to 1986, I'll immediately know that you're not to be taken seriously.

@KingLeo10 and @FC B are moving the goalposts and manufacturing strawman arguments regarding the Mr. UCL thingy.

No one claimed he was carrying Madrid. Madrid and Barcelona of that era were filled with greats in all positions so no single individual was close to carrying them regardless what some deluded acolytes claim.

He turned up in the CL most of the times and had immense impact in knockout stage games and was easily the best player in CL history putting up astonishing goal hauls nearly every season in that competition. That's beyond debate and facts.

FC B's ridiculous VAR argument is something I'd advice him to avoid at all costs coz that will open a Pandora's box for him since he supports the club he supports. Irony just died a painful death. Cough cough.....UEFAlona....cough cough....2009.....cough cough......Chelsea...... Drogba...... Find it hilarious when the fans of a club accused of fraud, shady payments and buying refs get all holier-than-thou about their superior rivals. Do me a favour!

You are far too emotionally attached to Ronaldo to debate reasonably on him. You've already started projecting out accusations of things I haven't even mentioned ( Never said anything about eye test or natural talent, or Messi 2022.)

Just as long as you are consistent and you will also include Haaland in your GOAT contention when he finishes his career (which again is something I would find highly amusing). Because as you said 'the numbers don't lie' and he will get around 700 goals as well. Already has a treble that Ronaldo doesn't too.

Well I explained my stand and conceded Maradona having a better peak without any bias. On the other hand.....
you dodged the question........

I'll ask again. Why and on what basis are those names you mentioned better than CR7 on an all time scale? Elaborate. I'm all ears(eyes)......

If anything, it seems you're too emotionally attached to this debate and your blind hatred for CR7 is clouding your rational judgement......

I did not dodge the question. I chose to step out of the conversation because I know that debating about Ronaldo with someone who has an extreme attachment to him is a waste of my, or anyone else's for that matter, time. The sort of attachment that leads to a man degrading himself in the Messi thread like you do and are presently doing.

If anyone else here asks me why R9 or Maradona is better than Ronaldo I will answer him, though my opinion of his ball knowledge will have to be severely re-evaluated, to the downside :messi:

Good to know that you have no answer to that. I thought so. It's because you can't possibly argue that those names had a better career than CR7 coz they didn't. Not even close.

Everything else is just excuses and my thoughts on Messi fanboys are irrelevant here since we aren't even talking about him here. So much for "ball knowledge" when your ultimate argument is "you rate Ronaldo so I won't answer"...........

You are as deluded as any PR7 fan out there.
"Carying" is a PR7 fan base marketing term used to "describe" how good PR7 was, the state of delusion in this term is too much for anyone "to argue" with I reckon.

indeed UEFAlona while Madrid "won" back to back CL's out of sheer refereeing decisions going their way with the likes of Kassai and his linesman, Cakir, Kuipers, Rocchi or Oliver helping them in an open manner that led no room for interpretation when they needed it the most. And yep, that's why in the last 5 seasons of CL they only managed to win a single CL not 4 out of 5 like before, this was is and will still be the most disgraceful refereeing favouritism ever in CL unless they somehow manage to remove VAR and make it again as it was back in their "glory" days.

Do yourself a favour and fuck off with this PR7 & Madrid cheap and ordinary propaganda.

Standard response from a clown who's stumped and has no answer. Thanks for letting us know and admitting that you never had a point to begin with.

The meltdown afterwards was entertaining and brought a smile to my face.

Would argue Bonucci was more overrated than Barzagli.

Puyol is kinda overrated because of his personality, hairstyle and heart.

Proper pashun merchant.

The guy was the ideal captain, brave mofo and a breath of fresh air in the sport but as a pure defender he's so overrated.

Just lacks the physical tools and defensive attributes or on the ball skills of actual all time greats.

Very good player and one of the few Barca players I respect as a person but an all time great CB? Never.

Wouldn't be against him getting into an all time Barca 11 though if that's what Barca fans claim.

Someone said: "What Puyol lacks in attributes or natural ability, he makes up with his heart, bravery and determination" : this basically forms the premise of my argument.
Puyol was a beast physically, despite his relatively short height for a defender. Maybe he's not in the top 10 defenders of all time but certainly one of the most iconic ones. If we look at Ramos, he is far from being a world class defender, but people are putting him in the GOAT conversation now because of his charismatic moments, all the late goals etc.

As for what makes a player overrated or not, there's arguments to bring in every case. I guess it's a combination of talent, numbers, and trophies won...

I feel like Zidane is also remembered as one of the GOATs because of his large impact in crucial games, but he wasn't that amazing throughout his whole career. He had a lot of moments where he was modest, and we can also look at his stats for this. Imo Xavi & Iniesta are closer to him than some would like to think. One huge disadvantage for them is that they have been overshadowed by Messi/CR7's era.

Don't know how to describe this but Zidane was more of a main man than Xavi and Iniesta.

For instance, you build a team around Zidane whereas Xavi and Iniesta are the vital cogs in the system you create.

Zidane had more X Factor and was more of a match winner or game changer. Also had the maverick vibe and the brutal physicality which Xavi and Iniesta hugely lack. He had a much better weak foot than Xavi and Iniesta and was much stronger in the air.

People will hate this take but:
If you rate Iniesta as high as Xavi then you are overrating him. Xavi was a notch above and the heartbeat of that system. Also had much better end product despite playing much deeper than Iniesta. Iniesta's La Croquetas and nimble ball carrying style is easy on the eye but Xavi was different gravy and ran games.

Well done mentioning Ramos. He's so fucking overrated it's comical. People mentioning him on the same level as Baresi and Maldini know fuckall about the game.

Ramos holds the record for most red cards and is very often sloppy defensively.

Both Ramos and Pique are VASTLY OVERRATED due to their trophy haul.

Like I always say, posters rating players solely on the basis of team trophies are numpties. David Villa, Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke have won everything but Harry Kane is still clear of them.

I can't lie, it's incredibly difficult for me to choose between them. Rather than picking sides, let's just agree that Xavi and Iniesta are one person:

Yeah, both of them are overrated, especially Ramos who some delusional fans consider him as the GOAT... Pique I feel is not as much talked about, and to be honest he only had 3-4 world class seasons in him. He's a Barca legend but that doesn't make him a GOAT defender... Even for Barca I would pick Puyol&Koeman as my defenders.

I've seen you defend Harry Kane a lot. He's a world class striker, I'll give you that. But if anything, I feel like Villa is underrated and forgotten by a lot of people when it comes to the last 10-15 years' best strikers.
