Personally think people assume a player is one of the best in his position automatically because he plays for Barca. Unfortunately, those days have been dying slowly since 2012.

Maybe, but the main fault of many posters here are better described by malvolio above you - people disregard mistakes of (in this situation) other keepers and take Stegens positives for granted.

Rory: you can do whatever, it's a discussion forum. I asked you for a comparison as it would be a continuation of the discussion. Yes I think many of the saves in that video are brilliant, but I rate him more based on watching him in games.

May 12th 2015, around 9:30 PM.
His prime lasted around 10 seconds when he saved Lewandowski's shot.

Lol so true, this is his Roberto PSG goal moment. If people really dive into the ucl that year they'll see he conceded in every away leg, the final and also only kept a clean sheet to Apoel and one of the Ajax fixtures in the group stage. Shipped 3 goals against PSG in the group, 2nd game in. Could have meant we lose the group

Stuff like this only shows your own poor understanding if anything.
Maybe to you and also to some very peripheral football fans Roberto was all about that goal, but I rate Roberto and I don't care at all about that. It's just silly to make a point like that on a board where most people watch the games and have watched Roberto hundreds of times.
And judging a keeper by just watching amount of goals let in...

edit: if you don't want to find a video yourself, can you give me three names that could replace Stegen and improve things?

I guess his main positive for you is his ability with his feet?

It's pretty much a basic requirement now for any goalkeeper in the top leagues to show some degree of competency and ability with their feet.

So yeah, not like that particular asset is unheard of in modern football.

Considering how shitty the whole team often was defensively it's hard to blame the keeper, or any single player.

I mean how often have we seen little defensive work from forwards + slow, weak midfield opponents could just walk by + slow defenders making mistakes left and right...idk, but i think even prime Kahn would've conceded quite a lot

Not saying ter Stegen is particularly amazing but i think there isn't much to be proud of for the whole team when it comes to defending against strong opponents.

Fair enough, I think they're mostly saves you should expect a europa league and above keeper to make. His short passing with defence is excellent and that is helpful for barca. For me his ability to perform in the big games, come out for corners and inspire the defence is too below the level needed for us. Practically no obvious replacements due to our finances so we're stuck with him.

Just because I write a sentence saying x, y or z it doesn't mean I don't also think of several other things. Do you think my opinion is only the exact things I write? If so that's utterly bizarre. Roberto was very good for a few years. He's been trusted based on that and ALSO due to poor recruitment and ALSO PARTIALLY living off reputation as a la masia player and that goal.

Ter Stegen's a bit like Alba, doesn't have the strength when things get rough.

He's also regressed in almost every aspect of his game. Even his passing has become worse, miss-timed and insecure. Tries too much for his own good. Dunning–Kruger effect for passers?

Anyways, he's not a bad keeper by any chance, but not someone you can count on when it matters.

would like to see donnarumma in a similar scenario to our 2-8 vs bayern. his goal being constantly bombarded, defense in front of him being shite and being asked to play with feet and distribute the ball under pressure.

people overreact as per usual and get on the latest hype train as if their trying not to be left out or something.

Well, at least with Donnarumma the coach won't have to pretend we have a GK good with his feet and force him to play like that against Bayern, and a good bonus he will be saving some of the goals.
