People are overreacting, he should play a limited role like Xavi did in treble season, then he will definitely contribute to the squad. But after this season we will see what will happen, Iniesta is a club legend. You don't treat you club legends like that, we should be glad barca is not forcing him out, he did so much for the club. Playing him in a limited role is the better option that forcing him out.

Iniesta has earned the right to decide his own future. If he decides to leave next summer then we'll let him do that. But we shouldn't push him out of the club against his own will just to get some money for him or to get rid of his wages. I don't think he'll want to go to another top European team (because there would be a possibility he'd have to face us in official games) if he decides to leave and I don't see him just going after money "Xavi way" to Qatar or China. To be fair I wouldn't be surprised if he stays here for 3-4 more years and then maybe decides to retire in his childhood team Albacete.

I also don't believe he's the type of person to put the club under pressure with having extreme financial demands. He might even accept pay cut to stay here as I don't think he's really motivated by money as much as most players. But he'll want to know what his future role in the team will be and he'll have to talk about that with Valverde if they didn't already. In ideal scenario he will still stay an important part of the team but he shouldn't be unquestionable starter anymore. Whether he'll accept his new/limited role or not we don't know. But given the fact how well Valverde handled some of the older players in Bilbao, especially Aduriz who almost had his best career years under Valverde aged 34-35, I believe he can also get the best that Iniesta can still offer out of him. People shouldn't expect Iniesta to be on his 2008-12 level because he won't play alongside Xavi and in his ideal system (I think Valverde's system will to be closer to Pep's than Lucho's but don't expect the same kind of midfield dominance). As great as they both were (and still are) individually they were just unmatched playing together. We'll most likely never get that again. That's why I never liked people talking about buying Xavi's and Iniesta's replacements. Yes, we can get good and possibly great midfielders (clearly better than we have now) but you can't buy their chemistry and understanding. But I believe Iniesta should and will stay an important player for us.

Good post

He probably wants to make the world cup 2018 his last hurrah, so he'll aim to get another year as (semi)-regular starter under valverde.

By the way, on the subject whether a club should offload its legends as soon as they underperfom: I staunchly in the "no player as bigger than the club" camp. Football is a professional sport and if a player really becomes a liability, then you can't afford to have this competetive disadvantage just for nostalgic reasons.

However, first of all, it is much harder to evaluate the worth of having legends like iniesta, totti, buffon and in a couple of years messi on the squad even if their footballing abilities have noticeably declined.

And secondly, even if you decide it's for the best to offload a player, this can be done with respect and dignity for both parts. I'm normally not a guy who thinks we have inherently the moral high ground over real, but i have to say, the way they handled casillas departure was outright disgusting, especially compared to the sending off we gave xavi.

A calculating approach doesn't need to be callous.

Improvin' Perfection!!
His prime didn't last that much time. Modric and other midfielders will be considered better just from their longevity

Prime is called prime for a reason...... Prime is only 2-3 years in most people's career! Iniesta was considered the best of his generation for 7-8 years straight! 2008 to 2015!!

I'd say he had a good 5-7 years in his prime. 2009 to 2015/2016.

You missed 2008 when he was one of the biggest reasons why Spain won the Euro! And Barca missed out on CL finals only because of Scholes's wicked goal!!

I intitially put 2008-2016 but hesitated because I don't remember that year very well.

Modric better than Iniesta? Lol. Iniesta's prime lasted long enough to consider him as one of the best midfielders ever. He is compared to Zidane and some people consider him better, to even say modric will be considered better than him is an insult to Dons legacy.

Without Ronaldo or Messi he would have won Ballon D'or few times.

Not sure if this is true at all, but if it is, then the board is just disgusting.

Sure, it's better for Iniesta to take a step back and he has already hinted towards that, but you don't sell a legend like that just so you can scrap together a few millions. His contract ends next season.
