Jeremy Mathieu

One week ago, he had only 2-3 fans on this forum who wanted him infront of Bartra against City.

But luckily, he proved that we can rely on him in big matches and that we have 4 decent defenders.

Also, some posters suggested that he played in all 5 defeats this Season.
Again, if he plays in 20 tough matches, some defeats are inevitable.
But he surely isn't a bad player, or the guy who brings the bad luck to the team.
He was very calm and more or less a wall in the defense along Pique.

Well done, Jeremy :mathieu::laliga:

The ginger wall played great yesterday. 2 solid games from him against top teams. Wonder what's going to happen now Busi is back. Will Masch start at CB again?

I wanted Bartra too but that doesn't mean I don't like Mathieu. I was one of the few who was actually defending his signing cause I watched quite a few of Valencia's matches and Matheiu was mostly a very solid player.

Signing him up for 4+1 seasons was quite outrageous though, you got to admit that.

From what we have seen till now from Lucho, he has more or less fixed and predictable rankings of all of our players:
Attackers:
1/2/3. Messi, Suarez, Neymar
4th: Pedro

Midfielders (Mcs)
1. Iniesta
2. Rakitić
3. Rafinha
4. Xavi
5. Sergi Roberto

Defensive midfielder:
1. Busi
2. Masch

Defenders (Cbs):
1. Pique
2. Masch
3. Mathieu
4. Bartra
?? Vermaelen

Gks:
1. Bravo
2. Mats

Until our revival, Lucho had strange rotations and some strange moves.
But since Atletico match, his moves are, imo, very predictable in terms of a starting lineup.

So, when Busi returns, Masch will be a 2nd Cb, and Mathieu will play when Lucho needs to rotate/rest Pique or Masch, and Mathieu will sometimes play both in tougher and weaker matches.
And Bartra will play till the end of the Season only in 2-3 easier (La Liga) matches when the schedule will be crowded, because Lucho won't make new experiments in this part of the Season.

Bartra or any other player who want to get higher on Lucho's list, will need to earn points in his books during preseason and in the first part of the next Season.
We won't see any surprises in the last 10-15 matches of this Season, imo.

Seeing that Dani is out for the PSG first leg, we could see a return of the 3-4-3 with Bartra at RCB.

Masch was clearly at fault. I cannot even imagine what would've happened on all those crosses and corners had Masch played at CB today.

They both were. Mathieu was at fault for Ronaldo's crossbar also. Good performance, but nowhere nearly as perfect as some here make it out to be. Pique was clearly man of the match.

Nonsense. His performance was better than "good".

Again, if you look at Lucho's logic in the last 20 matches (our winning streak), I highly doubt that he will do 3-4-3 experiments after our new version of 433 produced 19 wins in 20 matches (or 20 in 21, I don't know anymore).

Imo, I would put my money on our standard 433 with either Adriano or Montoya as a Rb as most logical options.
Bartra as a Rb also has some minor chances.

But again, Lucho will look to make the lowest possible amount of rotations/changes (just like with Dmc Masch after Busi's injury).

We played 3ATB in one of the PSG games earlier in the season if I remember correctly.

Yes, we did.
But that was in the moment when we haven't found our current tactics yet.
343 were in the days when we were in the biggest crisis and where Lucho was desperate and he was trying everything in order to find a winning formula.
We won in that match, but Lucho found the current 433 later, and never returned to 343 from Psg's match.

If we'll play 433 with Montoya:
-- we are losing only Alves
-- everything else is the same, and all players will play on their positions as in our 20-matches winning streak

If we'll play 343, what exactly are we gaining?
= only a formation which we tried once and won somehow
-- but we will lose all automatism, balance and chemistry from the last 20 matches

Again, 433 with Montoya or Adriano (eventually Bartra) as a RB makes a perfect sense according to Lucho's moves in the last 3 Months.
