Why would you say that? Umtiti may never play for us again, Pique is getting old, Lenglet will be a bench player. Why not go for De Ligt?

If Umtiti doesn't play, Lenglet will. De Ligt's too expensive. Not just the fee. +75m, 12m salary, 10m bonuses for his agent etc. Simply out of question.

People talk about being the next Varane but another profile he sort of has similarities to is Kurt Zouma.

Zouma was another very talented prospect that Chelsea snapped up from Saint-Étienne. He's tall (6'3) had pace and was a physically dominate CB and had the tools to evolve into something special. But a torn ACL back in 2016 pretty much ruined his development and hasn't been the same since and he's now at Everton on loan just trying to rebuild his career.

He just needs to avoid a torn ACL then

Tons of players do not make it at the highest level even if they possess fantastic talent. To have a great career you need the stars to be aligned. There are so many intangibles involved.

De Ligt is NOT COMING. GET OVER IT!

If they think he is the next Pique or Van Dyke, 75 mil is a good deal at his age. If they don't assess his prospects that much better than alternatives, probably better to go fishing with smaller bait. Either way there is little chance their true intentions get to the media unless it is deliberate from the club--so I doubt anyone here knows. Todibo on a free hardly makes or brakes the possibility. I would say how Umtiti plays this spring and health prospects is a much bigger factor weighing in for the summer.

Yeah, specifically, marking, decision making, positioning, concentration. Faster CBs tend to have had less reason to develop these traits to a high enough level. Physique is far from enough.
