Eric Abidal

He scored in the world cup final penalty shoot out. And yeah, his crossing is so bad.

edit: in fact didnt he score a thunder bolt from outside the box at the beginning of the season? Or maybe it just hit the crossbar..

In my opinion, Abidal was the weakest link @ Bayern. The man doesn't seem to have a brain. He's got the physical tools to be a great defender, and he indeed is a great defender the times he comes across an attacker who is equally brainless. But whenever a winger who knows when to withhold the cross and wait for the right time, he doesn't know what to do! And he can't fucking pass, I wanted to slap him every time he lost the ball in compromising positions.
I don't care if he can't score. It's not his job. By the way, maz, I think you might be thinking of the 2nd leg of the Copa de SM el Rey last season @ Valencia. He came very close to scoring from outside the box. It would have been a fantastic goal. But that's beside the point.
I do care, however, that he doesn't combine decent defensive actions with retarded decisions in taking the ball out, effectively canceling out his own good work. The defense has looked much much better with Puyol as left back and Márquez-Piqué as the central pair. This position should be a priority for Txiki to improve upon come summer. Maybe our genius doctors at BarçaLab can formulate a magical potion that reverses aging, that way we can apply it to Sergi, Maldini, or Lizarazu. And while we're at it, also apply it on Pelé and sign him, so maybe he can talk crap with Eto'o. And he doesn't have to do those stupid viagra commercials because him being young means that it's obvious he doesn't need viagra.

I think he is a very good defender for our style of play. Teams try to counter attack us down the wings, and he is brilliant at stopping that because while he may not be the best one-on-one defender, he is an excellent recoverer in that even if his man is beyond him he will still catch him and win the ball.

Wingback, leftback, fullback.. potato, potato..

No matter what, I don't get why he's crossing is so bad.

ah. well, theyre completely different. As for his crossing i guess its just not something he can ever improve. Its a shame because on the odd occasion he gets in a good position its basically a waste opportunity.

Ah well, in modern football, there isn't a big difference between the different types of backs, imo. But let's not get into that.

Indeed.. If only he had the leg of Sylvinho, we could've scored at least 10 goals more.

Its the abidal topic so theres no reason we shouldnt get into it! In my mind, wing backs are what we played with when rijkaard used 3-4-3. They are sort of full backs on a rubber band that only move back with the play but as soon as the team receives the ball they catapult forward again. Even daniel alves doesnt play a complete wing-back role for fcb..although he's very close to it.

Since u mentioned Sylvinho, he is a really good crosser of the ball. Like u say its a shame abi cant cross like him. However that would mean abi would be given more attacking freedom and that goes against the role pep wants him to play.

There are some truth in that. ;)
Traditional wingbacks are often used in 3-backline tactics.. Oh well, I will call him a fullback then.

Crazy
Abidal glad to be back

Last Saturday he was given the green light from Club doctors to return to action after a month and a half injury layoff. Three days later he played the 90 minutes of the CL match against Bayern Munich. A great way to build confidence.
Eric Abidal had to wait a full 52 days to play that game in the Allianz Arena (1-1). Previously he had been named as a sub against Recreativo de Huelva and Josep Guardiola believed that the match against Bayern Munich, with a 4-0 advantage from the first leg, was the ideal opportunity for the French international to ease himself back.

Cautious

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Eric Abidal revealed that he is feeling good “but a little afraid of picking up another injury”. However, he believes this will be temporary and that “slowly and taking things easy” he will play “again with confidence”.

Friendship with Ribéry

Another plus for Abidal in Munich was the chance to meet up with Franck Ribéry, a friend and team-mate from the France international team. Asked by reporters about a possible move for Ribéry to FC Barcelona, Abidal was uncommitted: “He’s someone I know well but I don’t know what he wants to do next year. We talked about non-sporting matters”.

Ribéry could fit in

However, Abidal admitted that he would like to see Ribéry at Barça: “It would be good if he could come here. I believe he could adapt. He’s got quality and he saw that against Barça it was difficult to have the ball, and what he likes is to have it”.

Objective: the league

Rather than focus on the Champions League semi-final against Chelsea, Abidal believes it’s necessary to concentrate on “three very important league matches (and) keep building on the run of good results”. In particular he is determined to get a good result against Getafe, something he is convinced will be important in the hunt for the league title.
