I have never really been much of a fan, but Man United used him all wrong. Mourinho started it by playing him as a CB and a DM because of his obsession with tall players. In the youth team he was a striker. Scotland did the same - as recently as 2022 or 2023 he was being used as a CB in a back three.

He's generally not involved much in general play - a bit but often on the periphery. However, Napoli have cultivated a role for him that suits him perfectly, and are reaping the rewards. As a physical presence and runner into the box he can be a big threat - especially because he's an excellent finisher.

Fair play to him for getting out of the toxic Man United (though I am sure he still loves them) and making a success of himself.

I read he played as striker when he was younger, think thats his best position 🧐

He's become a very effective player when played in the right position. I still think Serie A as a whole is an average league and that has helped him to shine. It's also played at a snails pace compared to the Premier League. McTominay often looked like a carthorse for United, a player that's extremely one paced. We've also seen the likes of Lookman flop in the Premier League but look a completely different player in Italy.

He playing like Prime Fellaini.

Just like Fellaini he's better as more of an AM that gets into the box and dominates with his aerial threat and goalscoring ability.

Ofcourse Fellaini was much better in the air and had better chest control.

Unique profile which many managers seem to like. Moyes, Mourinho and Van Gaal were very fond of Fellaini.

Soucek under Moyes was another one with the same profile.

This is useless

Players can shine in different environments, grow as players, it has often little to do with level of the league

There are many examples of players that were underwhelming in Serie A and then stormed the PL...

McTominay is a useful footballer with limited skillset but right mentality and attitude. United used him completely differently to what Conte did and that's the main reason

Conte saw this guy and knew this is not a midfielder, but he has different abilities. In Manchester nobody has the understanding of football that can rival Conte, that is the main issue here

I agree...

I've followed this dude in Napoli this season and he did great. Italian football has done better than English football last 10-20 years overall. Just makes you think what the fuck is up with Man United

Serie A isn't what it once was, and overall is nowhere near the same quality as the PL. It's not even debatable. It definitely helps McTominay, and he's much more suited to the slower pace there.

I've done a u-turn on this player. After not liking him at Man United, it is now obvious that they used him totally wrong as I said.

As a runner into the box who can finish and affect the game in the final third, he's very very good. Conte has the system to get the best out of him, with better midfielders and centre backs than United had.

There's nothing wrong with being a box crashing goalscoring midfielder, like he or Bellingham or Lampard. I think sometimes I am too dogmatic in that I expect all my midfielders to be amazing in tight spaces and able to control the game. There's room for different types of players.

He's class. Let's hope he continues doing decent for Scotland too (though I was a bit disappointed with him at the Euros).
