Patrick Kluivert

You're welcome
I was too young to actively remember him but don’t buy he edges Suarez.

Retired very early as well.

I avoid comparing eras. Ajax youth system produced those Marco Van Basten prototypes for decades, the CF-playmaker type and Kluivert was one of them. Even Suarez was signed by Ajax from Groningen in such capacity. Kind of, Suarez was more of a winger early on.

Kluivert rose to fame at very early age, same as R9, one of the top CFs in late 90s, but by 2001 he declined a lot. In fact I can say he performed well only under Van Gaal as manager. Post-Barca career was unremarkable.

Good post but I wouldn't put Kluivert on the same list as players mentioned.
In fact, he was similar to Ferran. Very frustrating to watch.

Putting this here, in order to not drag another thread in different discussion.

Kluivert had 4 straight seasons with 20+ goals, that is actually very good output for a striker during that era. Only his first season (adapting to Barca as 22 years old signing) and his last season (he severely declined early on) and was always in the discussion of being one of the best strikers around, sure never in the discussion of being the best, but for 4 straight years he was one of the best players in struggling Barca. Very comparable numbers to the likes of Batistuta, Crespo, Veiri among others.

Frustrating is still very accurate description, he was very wasteful, but was still capable of producing a banger every few games.

He had everything to be an all time great CF.. apart from the desire.

Coasted too many games and didnt work hard enough but could have moments of pure quality.

As he got older the quality wasnt enough and way he acted off field and most likely trained with little effort caught up on him.

That's a pretty good description of him. Had most of the tools, but not the competitive spirit to make it big.

Sort of like a Benzema without the mentality for me.

Kluivert won something like 1 title of any note in his career after the age of 20.

As said. All the ability in world but lacked aggression and work rate and that Barca side he was in rolled over and had their belly rubbed too often and he was part of that.

That Barca sides were out worked far too often by inferior technical teams and finishing 4th x2 in that time it was a hard watch at times.

Going indirectly from Ronaldo to Kluivert was a huge downgrade.

So much so that Kluivert had to say at his press conference that he wasn't Ronaldo.

Was never keen on him. Too much of a fair weather player and seemed to go missing in big games too often.

Huge talent on a technical level but not enough outside that. The promise at Ajax was huge though.

I wonder if things would have been better if he was playing more often for a functional team.

He was one of the reasons I became a Barca fan, saw him playing for the Dutch team, and was like this guy is good, figured out he played for Barca and so on.

The board thought they had it all figured out lol

He wasn't the best of professionals and injuries led to his early decline before turning 30.

Nowadays when his name is brought up, I think more of his personal life. He caused another man's death in a car accident (another injured) for speeding way above limits in 1995. And he got away with some Mickey Mouse verdict of hours spent in community service. That shit is minimum 5-10 years behind bars in general. He got O.J.'d.
