Ousmane Dembélé

4-5 years ago, Eriksen was a flavor of a decade.
He was the best midfielder (or don't take it literally, among top 2-3 midfielders in the world) on our forum for a few years.

Also, in hindsight, it's funny to look at the past when people used to say: if we don't buy Pogba, we are screwed. That guy will dominate the world for the next 10 years. There isn't any other midfielder of his age who is even close to him.

Yeah never got the Eriksen hype personally, does have one great game now and then but can be relatively ineffective quite a lot too. In dead ball situations, he can be fantastic but a lot of his general gameplay is nothing special.

Did we spend our money before that already? Not sure of the timeline.

We've signed Paulinho, Semedo, Mina and Deulofeu earlier that summer for around 100m in total but after Neymar left we obviously still had enough money.

We've bought Dembele a few days before Mbappe went to PSG. So theoretically if we would prefer Mbappe (and he'd want to get here) we could've signed him. He would be more expensive but at the same time easier to get (Monaco already earned 200m selling players like B.Silva, Mendy and Bakayoko that summer so they've accepted a loan with obligatory buy for Mbappe - and directly helping PSG not getting into troubles with FFP - and maybe we could've negotiating something similar though that wasn't really neccessary for us at that point as we've still had Neymar money) considering our prolonged and tough negotiations with Dortmund. So that also tells me Dembouz was our primary target. We were also still (unsuccessfully) chasing Coutinho at that point.

Paulinho actually played well in the first half of season.
Deulofou the next Messi, hyped by fans, dont forget it.

Deulofeu was pretty good for Barca B and Spain U21 so the hype was somewhat warranted.
He's the player with most U21 caps and goals in Spain's history.

I always felt that deulofeu was never really given time to prove himself, he would?ve been decent

Nah he's had a chance prove himself in many teams in almost every big league. If he was supposed to be a big shot he'd have exploded at one of those teams. Never even surpassed Everton in terms of level.

I think Deulofeu was mainly brought back because the club believed we could make a bigger profit from him than we eventually did after him performing well for Everton (in his first season there) and Milan for half a season.
