Messi, with 76 goals in 2012, surpasses Pelé's mark of 75 goals scored in 1958

Leo Messi, at just 25 years old, has reached the heights only visited by football legends. This Sunday, at the Iberostar, the Argentine surpassed Pelé’s mark of goals scored in a calendar year. Counting his two goals against Mallorca, Messi has scored 76 goals in 2012, one more than the Brazilian did in 1958.

64 for Barça, 12 for Argentina

Of his 76 goals, 64 of them were scored for Barça and 12 were scored for Argentina. The Argentine has averaged 1.29 goals per match in his 59 matches this year (51 games for his Club, 8 for his country). Pelé, in 1958, scored 75 goals from 53 matches, averaging 1.41 goals per match. 66 of the Brazilian’s goals were scored for Santos and 9 were scored for the Brazilian national team.

48 of Messi’s 76 goals in 2012 were scored in La Liga - 33 scored last season and 15 scored this season. In addition, the Argentine has scored 11 goals in the Champions League, 3 in the Cup and 2 in the Spanish Super Cup.

Pelé, on the other hand, scored 58 goals in the Paulista Championship and 8 in the Rio-Sao Paulo Tournament, in addition to his 9 goals for the Brazilian national team. Of his nine goals for Brazil, six of them were scored in the World Cup in Sweden – the first of three World Cup titles won by O Rei – and three more goals were scored in friendlies.

Málaga and Bayer Leverkusen

Even though Atlético Madrid are Messi’s favourite victim, in 2012 the teams that the Argentine has scored on the most are Málaga and Bayer Leverkusen. Both teams, in the Liga and the Champions League respectively, have conceded six goals to the Argentine. Perhaps Messi’s most notable performances of the year were against Bayer Leverkusen when he scored five goals in one match, and his matches against Valencia and Espanyol where he scored four goals against both teams.

I definitely think he can surpass Muller. It's amazing that Messi could have 30 goals for Barcelona in this club season before January. 30 goals in a club season is really good for most goalscorers and Messi could do it before the winter break. :worthy:

Absolutely.

There were strikers that used to win the Capocannoniere, Pichichi and such by banging just above 30 goals a season, which was deemed a remarkable feat in itself. Then comes Messi and messes the whole thing up (pun intended) ;)

I never thought anyone would be able to surpass Pele's record. It still didn't quite sink in what Messi achieved there.
