It's OK money. He still has a bit of potential, but in 2 seasons since he debut for Koeman for example, he has regressed in his standing at both Barcelona and Spain U21. The first one you could expect, but the latter given Spains lack of midfield talent is a bit of a shit really.

A reckon Xavi could have done a bit more though considering we have 4 mids, the overall level of LaLiga is poor and that guys like Bob (admittedly some at RB) get 1500 minutes.

Hope he remains uninjured and gets back on track. The irony of going to Portugal is that the league sucks compared to Spain, yet the market valuations if you play well are higher. So he could actually play a decent season there and have a higher perception and value than a decent season in LaLiga.

You just know that if a portuguese team comes knocking, willing to place 10 mil. euro for a prospect, they've seen the light somehow - the buyback is crucial.

No shame in leaving and returning later. Some players just need extra time and consistent minutes to get to that level. Won't be surprised if we activate that buyback clause within two years.

Kessie will leave too so don't get your point. Also Nico wouldn't directly compete for minutes with him. Pretty sure Xavi sees his best position in the FDJ role (he even said something like that) so it's clear he wouldn't play there as Frenkie is almost always available. Kessie plays further up the field and if he stays will compete with Gavi, Gundo and Pedri (although I see Pedri or Gundo also playing deeper alongside FDJ in some games).

But I actually give Nico props for wanting to leave, play regularly and prove himself in a good CL level team and potentially return as a better player ready for first team minutes in a year or two.

Shows he's ambitious and confident in his abilities. Unlike guys like Mavericky who was just happy to root on our bench until he was 22 and even then didn't want to leave, lol. Nico was the one who pushed to go on loan to Valencia last year (Xavi wanted to keep him) and he did well there, just got unlucky with injury or he could develop even better.
