Your thinking of the year after when Man Utd beat Liverpool. I remember watching that and thinking, "you can't win a cup final with a guy called Phil Babb in your lineup".
Ohhh yeah. Memory playing tricks on me. I remember now.

To be fair Phil Babb had talent lol, he was just a fanny.

It was funny whenever they were upset in a game. They did rule the roost domestically but they struggled a fair bit in Europe.

They just weren't a very good team until the very late 90s.

PL standard was poor overall in the formation years.

I think Arsene Wengers arrival helped immensely, both the PL and Fergusons United.

True, remember them going out to teams like Rotor Volgograd in qualifiers in early 90s.

The PL needed 7 or 8 years to become a strong league. It was still in decline following the European ban of the clubs in the second half of the 80s due to Heysel.

Plus what also helped them was the 'class of 92' (cringe term but you get my point). I know Ferguson was an excellent manager, but that was a one-off in recent years. Barca for example keep bringing along gems, but Beckham, Scholes and Giggs are the only top class players they've brought through since the Busby Babes, so I believe it was more of a fluke, lol.

Gary Neville was also bloody good too but that face he pulls just makes people never rate him.

He was good - very steady and solid -, but the reason I didn't mention him is I wouldn't really put him on the level of the other three. Plus I think they brought through equal or better talent players to him in the 80s (eg Norman Whiteside).

Butt was a decent squad player too. Butt would be by far their best midfielder now, lol.

I've always had fondness for fat goalkeepers.

Always thought that Southall looked like a fat seal flying around the goal. Especially when he pushed into his forties playing.

Then there was Kevin Pigeon Pressman.

And let's not forget the Barcelona Handball goalkeeper Danish Pastry Nielsson.
