Jeremy Mathieu

Apparently he's the most expensive defender over 30 of all time. And no, he only has two appearances for France. One in a game against the USA and the other in another friendly too.

Seeing Sakho or Varane as CB, I think it's a good thing he wasn't chosen by Deschamps .
Also, as a LB he had to fight with Abidal and Evra, when they were in their prime, while Mathieu arguably reached it in the last year as a CB, which isn't a surprise for a defender, 30 can be a fair year for a peak.

 "He's old... he's ugly.... he's 31.... 20 million!?!?!"

The reactions here aren't surprising but still, perplexing nonetheless. Most of the opinions here aren't formed by actual observations of Mathieu but rather superficial and lazy perceptions. He's fast, versatile/mobile, magnificently tall, and has good technique. Sure he isn't a defender of the very highest pedigree but that complaint just affirms that people on this forum want players that are either overhyped and young or have big names and pretty resumés rather than seeing their abilities and effectiveness on the pitch. Mathieu is a very good player and was one of the best CB's in La Liga last season despite continuous instability at Valencia. He's experienced, knows the language, knows the league, and has the skillset to learn our system. What he gives us is precisely what we lack, learn to appreciate that at least.

I understand that the price isn't ideal but complaining about Barca overpaying for transfers is like complaining the sky is blue. There's nothing new in that regard and this is especially understandable given how little leverage we have with the state of our defensive crisis. Yet people take this price tag or his age to prematurely form bad judgments of the player when I'm certain that a vast majority of this forum knows nothing about him given their lack of exposure to any teams that don't have a 5 star rating on Fifa or whatever. Neymar's transfer got us tangled up in a huge financial scandal and cost us an astronomical amount of money as we ultimately funded his father's retirement for 2-3 lifetimes. Yet the reaction to that was "Oh noes the money isn't his fault he's just a player, we have to protect and love him". On the other hand, now that Mathieu is here for an inflated sum you guys are locked and ready to crucify on command despite the fact that he even took a damn paycut to facilitate the transfer. Mob mentality and double standards galore.

I am glad to see some people still have some sanity in them in this forum, i really had high hopes joining it, but reality has struck me hard in recent month. What is most puzzling for me is people complaining about how much a player cost us or how much we sold someone for. Is it your money? Did you have to pay something in real life after Mathieu was signed? Because if some of you root for the "most successful "transfer clubs, you should maybe reconsider your loyalty and go find some Porto or Arsenal forums.
Fact is that we have been missing Abidal-type of player ever since he left and to some extent also when his illness appeared. One of the biggest reasons we had so much success starting from 08 season was because we had a defensively solid LB, strong fast and smart, who also could play as CB. Now finally we have replaced him and all you can do is complain about paying 20 mil, which is probably 3 times as cheap as it would have been to sign some superstar CB or that he is 30, although countless defenders in the past, also our very own Puyol and Abidal have shown their best qualities after turning 30. Really, stop visiting this forum and go play your football manager.
I wish there was some option to "thank" or give quality score to some posts, as DonAndres really deserves some for his

We really should have a way to up vote or down vote posts like on Reddit.

That would probably require a change in the format of the forum.

IMO easier would be a "like" or "thumbs up" option for each post and a way to track "likes" received and given under your avatar. That won't hide bad posts, but it will highlight posters who consistently give quality postings.

That's a good idea too.

He has good heading ability, strong and powerful. At last we maybe able to defend corners instead of fearing when they are given against us(I would just change the change the channel until the corner was taken).
