@Serghei

Think of it as a flipped version of the 3-4-3 we played in 11/12 except with Alba as LM.

Except Alba is nowhere near as gifted with the ball as Alves 08-12. He is a good overlapping fullback, not a creative one like Alves was and still can be for a year or two.

Can you imagine Alba ever doing something like this?

No, IMO Alba's game is pretty well rounded, a lot better in defence than people usually give him credit for.

 "He's old... he's ugly.... he's 31.... 20 million!?!?!"

The reactions here aren't surprising but still, perplexing nonetheless. Most of the opinions here aren't formed by actual observations of Mathieu but rather superficial and lazy perceptions. He's fast, versatile/mobile, magnificently tall, and has good technique. Sure he isn't a defender of the very highest pedigree but that complaint just affirms that people on this forum want players that are either overhyped and young or have big names and pretty resumés rather than seeing their abilities and effectiveness on the pitch. Mathieu is a very good player and was one of the best CB's in La Liga last season despite continuous instability at Valencia. He's experienced, knows the language, knows the league, and has the skillset to learn our system. What he gives us is precisely what we lack, learn to appreciate that at least.

I understand that the price isn't ideal but complaining about Barca overpaying for transfers is like complaining the sky is blue. There's nothing new in that regard and this is especially understandable given how little leverage we have with the state of our defensive crisis. Yet people take this price tag or his age to prematurely form bad judgments of the player when I'm certain that a vast majority of this forum knows nothing about him given their lack of exposure to any teams that don't have a 5 star rating on Fifa or whatever. Neymar's transfer got us tangled up in a huge financial scandal and cost us an astronomical amount of money as we ultimately funded his father's retirement for 2-3 lifetimes. Yet the reaction to that was "Oh noes the money isn't his fault he's just a player, we have to protect and love him". On the other hand, now that Mathieu is here for an inflated sum you guys are locked and ready to crucify on command despite the fact that he even took a damn paycut to facilitate the transfer. Mob mentality and double standards galore.

Very true.

Everyone wants Benatia or Hummels just because they're big names but I highly doubt they'd do well here.

It's funny how everyone thinks they know the best defender for Barcelona or what is right for our club.. We sign a decent defender for 20m and we are still complaining. It didn't depend on us, it depended on Valencia. They said either pay the 20m or forget about Mathieu..

What were we supposed to do? Not match the offer? I believe we would sign another defender though. This time around i believe Barca wouldn't make the same mistakes again..I also hope we sign Cuadrado b/c he brings flexibility, speed, skills, and directness. Sometimes we would need that.

Strangely, he wasn't good enough all this time when he was younger and available below 10 mil.

Anyway.. welcome to FCB Mathieu!

A lot of people wanted him signed last summer and he was only really converted into a CB full time at Valencia about six months before that.

FIFA/PES/Football Manager mentality. People think you can buy the big names in football and you'll win everything. You'd think the failure of the Galactico's would have taught them otherwise.

Well, making experiments isn't the way either... We keep signing players just to play them out of position, we sign FBs to play CB, DMs to play CB, AMs to play RW and SS to play CF...

And 20 million is just stupid, this board is an embarrasment...

And your mentality is what exactly?

Mathieu at CB is not playing him out of position.

How much would you have been happy for them to pay?

Mathieu might actually be the kind of player to play well in his 30's, a late bloomer as they say. If we get around 3 years of good football from him, with just few/minor injuries, 20m might not seem that much.

Hell, we payed 25m for Chygrynskiy. He was 23-24 at the time. Did his age help? No.
