Because the club can't sign freely and needs to prioritize positions. Especially since the GK spot jumped to priority number 1 spot. When a strategic transfer became possible, other positions moved to the back of the prio list.
And before the club tries to transfer another player they're not 100% convinced of, it's way better to keep playing with Garcia and Martin as back-ups. At least here we know what we're getting. Back-up positions should be filled with La-Masia, not with bums who just cost us salary and don't identify with the club.
Don't start a Bartomeu policy again.
Especially in Kounde's case, Garcia was a good discovery in the end of the season and can play way more games which will leave Kounde rested and fit enough for the most important games. Flick just used Kounde in every game possible last season, that has to change.

Not easy to sign very good CBs.
If Saliba doesn't renew with Arsenal then maybe he becomes an option since his contract runs out in 2027 and I doubt they let him leave for free.

I'm throwing Valencia's Mosquera's hat into the ring as a cheap CB option. 20 year old Spain U21 international. Always looked a good prospect when I've seen him.
Was actually shocked to hear he was on his way to Leipzig but talks broke down. 1 year left on his contract so is available for a cut price 20m.
Arsenal are close to buying him now though.
Doesn't look like we will buy any CBs at all if there weren't any rumours surrounding us with Mosquera.
Seems a great market opportunity.

There is absolutely no way Gerard Martin should be anywhere near this team. What happens if balde is injured for a longer stint? Immediate season over.
We need a backup LB that's a non negotiable. We don't need something special given that we're likely getting Nico. We just need someone decently solid and these kind of players are not that hard to find or sign for relatively cheap. It can even be someone slightly older.
