Of course, that's how it's done. And markers like a young player delivering well at 3 consistent jumps in his career before the age of 24 (South American local club > First European club > First serious European club from a big league) will surely attract attention from a gifted football expert from a big club.

A guy passes all 3 tests he gives in his career at a young age, chances are he'll pass the 4th and achieve even bigger things. Those are key markers you need to look at, and somebody at PSG did. That's how proper talent spotting works.

Agreed.

I'll just add though in regards to Pacho, they also signed Berardi half a season before for 20m who was a miss. 6 months before that they signed Skriniar for free who was another best. So that's 72m for Pacho to be a success (40m Pacho fee, 20m Barardi, 12m Skriniar sign on fee) excluding wages.

So there are certain margins they have which we can't afford.

I forgot Skriniar - seems like he was a total flop for them.

Inigo probably had the better season, well, definitely had the better season, if we're being honest. On an individual level.

Inigo had a bad end to the season, though. And he had an awful first season here.
Add that to the fact that he is 2 years older than Rudiger.
Add that to the fact that he has only 1.726 career minutes in CL, vs 5.778 career minutes for Rudiger.

Is it a safe bet that Inigo will still do better next year? A decline should be expected and against the best he suffered at the end.

And Real already signed Hijsen, and tapping both Saliba and Konate to replace aging Rudiger, injury prone Alaba and Militao.

The only blessing was that Inter rejected their bid of 80m and preferred to keep him a year and lose him for free.

Would have been another on their Ugarte, Kolo Muani big money flopline.
That's mental of Inter isn't it. Not saying this out of hindsight but was never much of a fan of Skriniar in the first place. Seemed to fit Inter and Serie A like a glove but he could never play in this more dynamic PSG team.

Theres just nothing to be learned from a club like PSG. Pacho seems like the flavor of the month… Jamrock is right. Not to forget he plays in a much more secure team and system. Best we can hope for to fix our defence is a worldclass DM (sole hope right now is Bernal) and maybe binning the #10 for a 2nd CM.

Inter just had the CL final that year so probably thought it would be a better ROI to push on with some signings in other areas while retaining Skriniar.

Yeah. They'd have been better off taking the transfer fee.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing I guess. But you should never turn down 80m for a CB - especially one who's only 'decent' like him.

Sure, you can take that as a lesson that PSG is a club that has too many flops and we shouldn't act like them.
OTOH, we could also learn that they knew the importance of great CB duo and didn't stop until they achieve it.
Barca OTOH, seems more and more in the comfort with our defense.
It isn't just CB, I can get us not being after one this summer, but the fact that we aren't even after a LB and trusting Martin is insufferable. And please don't say Torrents, as the kid is 18 with injury history that some players a decade older didn't have

For the record, I hate looking at current champions and trying to take lessons from them.

Atletico are trying to sign him, but I like Hincapie.

If you can stomach him "only" being 1.84m that is of course. Can play LB too.

Being semi-realistic since the likes of Saliba even next summer isn't happening IMO.

Konate - Tall, good on the ball, very quick.

Schlotterbeck - Tall, great on the ball, versatile, not the quickest however.

Hincapie - Average height, good on the ball, very quick.

Schlotterbeck and Hincapie are both left-footed as well.

And then you obviously have some talents here and there, but I've no clue how good someone as hyped as Ousmane Diomande(Sporting) for example is.

What do you make of Benfica playing hardball for Carreras and Madrid moving onto Grimaldo btw?
