A fun exercise that I've done is from the players selected for the 2018 WC, what would have been my starting XI (The squad selection was really bad. Player needed to be selected being not selected and with not many real CMs that can run)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018_FIFA_World_Cup_squads#Argentina

This is the starting XI that I would have chosen from the players selected

-----------------Aguero (30)------Messi (31)
Acuna (26)-------Banega (30)---Lo Celso (22)-----Di Maria (30)
Tagliafico (25)---Rojo (28)----Otamendi (30)-----Mercado (32)
---------------------------Armani (32)

Subs: Enzo Perez??, Dybala

I want some legs and energy in midfield to help conserve Messi's energy so Acuna and Lo Celso were definitely needed. Banega build up play was more needed compared to Biglia and Mascherano. Mascherano maybe had a role as a CB but never in midfield at this stage. Armani was in better form than Caballero so he would have been great.

Still don't think Argentina would have been 1st in the group stage as Croatia had an incredible team, but would have shown a much better performance in the whole tournament.
Messi and Di Maria were better in 2018 than 2022. Still in their peak.

Aguero was still in his peak too.

This team works under the right manager and system.

Rojo, Otamendi and Mercado is the Bermuda Triangle of defenders.

Otamendi is dumb, but at least skilled defensively. Rojo and Mercado on the other hand were shit and dumb,

Still pissed off at Rojo for ruining the Copa 2016 final and being shite overall in the WC18. I shouted loudly though when he scored that goal vs Nigeria in WC18.

Cuti Romero needs to be goated for elevating Otamendi's performances. Otamendi was so lost before Cuti's debut.

Some guy on Redcafe said Romero was overrated and not that good after the EL final. and a few others agreed with him.

No idea what they watch - look how bad Spurs defence is when he's not playing or he's carrying an injury.

He's an old-school warrior with lots of leadership and great defensive qualities.

Finalized list that includes the domestic players and the injured players removed has been released by Scaloni to face Chile Away and Colombia Home!

LB: Tagliafico, Barco, Medina

RM: RDP, Palacios
DM: Enzo, Paredes, Barrenechea
CM: Lo Celso, Paz

RW: Messi, Simeone, Mastantuono
CF: Alvarez, Lautaro
LW: Almada, Nico G., A. Correa

Players removed from the pre-list:
- Alexis Mac Allister (discomfort)
- Nicolas Dominguez (discomfort)
- Alejandro Garnacho
- Taty Castellanos

Players included
- Troilo - I haven't seen play much, it'll be interesting to see how he plays
- Lomonaco - The best CB in the Argentina league, plays very similarly to Pique
- Barrenechea
- Mastantuono

Positives
- No Pezzella!!!
- Mastantuono, enough said

Negatives
- MacA and Dominguez being out
- Not sure why Castellanos have been dropped as the FW position look a bit light now

The game Vs Chile is happening in a few days. Otamendi, Enzo and Paredes have yellow card suspension and can't play.

My starting XI vs Chile

Almada---------Alvarez----------Messi
-----------Lo Celso-------Palacios
----------------Barrenechea
Tagliafico----Balerdi----Romero-----Molina
-------------------Dibu

Subs:
- Paz for Almada
- Mastantuono for Lo Celso
- Medina for Tagliafico
- Lomonaco for Romero
- Foyth for Molina

I would honestly not play Lautaro at all for these WCQs. Think he hasn't fully recovered from his injury, but if game time is what he needs, sub him in for Alvarez

Tend to agree lol.

The squads that Spain and France will bring will be something.

Love Messi but no 39 year old can make a difference at the top level in KOs.

Argentina badly need a new CB to pair with Romero.
For Spain, I do see question marks on the GK, RB and ST. Even having Pedri as a 10 in the national team is questionable too.

France has an incredible attack, but there is question marks on having Mbappe as a 9 and the tactical setup to maximize Mbappe. I love Kone but I doubt their midfield can win the midfield battle vs Spain and vs Argentina.

Argentina does need a new CB to pair with Romero. There is a ready made CB in the form of Senesi and who knows how Lisandro will recover (there's news that Lisandro is on course to return by September), but Scaloni is not selecting Senesi for whatever reason.

Germany will be highly competitive as well.
Be surprised if the winner isn't one of Spain, Germany or France. England as well I guess but they always bottle it. Argentina have a shout in my opinion but less than those three/four. Bear in mind too that the World Cup has only been successfully defended twice (by Italy in 1938 and Brazil in 1962). History isn't in Argentina's favour.

Portugal have an outside bet if they drop Ronaldo. But I don't rate Martinez at all as a coach. The continent it's held on seems to matter less these days, but it being in the Americas might be a small advantage for Argentina and Brazil. It would be harder for them to beat the four big European powerhouses if held in Europe.

Edit: just looking at the odds and Brazil are the second-favourites in the UK. How are they always so highly favoured, lol? I do rate plenty of their players but other squads are definitely stronger. And they have gone 23 years without winning it. I am assuming it's just because they're Brazil, and the aforementioned being played in the Americas likely plays its part too.
