You rarely see him attempt and complete a long Puig-esque grass carpet through ball and Yamal had to throw it away.

I've been watching Pedri in isolation the past few games. Though he is among the best at handling the ball playing the game today, I've been pretty shocked at one aspect of his game— he's a ball-watcher. The lad barely scans the field at all when he doesn't have the ball. He *might* look over his shoulder when a pass is already on the way but he generally has NO idea what's going on outside his field of vision. Once he's turned to face and jog towards one side of the pitch, he has no idea what's going on behind him, the side he just left. And he's constantly demanding the ball, and somewhat petulant when he doesn't receive it (usually being ignored for good reason, as he's well-marked and his teammates with the ball see better options that he himself is unaware of).
In other words, he has absolutely no idea what he's going to do with the ball before he receives it. Chameleon Eyes, this boy is not. I don't believe you can be a truly great midfielder without scanning being part of your skillset. You need to know ALL your options before you receive the ball.
FdJ, on the other hand, has improved greatly in this regard, which has resulted in him releasing the ball more quickly than in the past, when he used to dwell on nearly every ball.
Really good observation. Since he's press resistant and conservative on possession (Xavi's pet let's not forget) he's limiting potentiality of attacking threat to moments he feels comfortable in. Busi, Iniesta, Xavi would never discount any moment of play much less be lazy in awareness de facto limiting those moments.
Now thinking back I do remember panda being more aware when Messi was still here since he had to be with Messi's unpredictability of passes not to mention tiki taka was still being played.
I'm really sick of his lateral dribbles too. Take a man on face to face and go up the pitch ffs, and not just when defender's already backed off.
Deserved that Man of the match tonight. Shame he had to play 90 mins and hope he regains freshness for El Clasico
He did but tbf would give MOTM to Leo Roman
He isn't an offensive minded player so it can explain his lack of direct take on against his opponent. Also physical strength plays big part too. Frenkie has quick burst that Pedri doesn't.With all due respect, that last part is truly nonsensical. His lateral dribbles are usually intended to shift the focus of the attack to the other side of the pitch. It seems to be a tradeoff to the switches of play he used to do when he played LCM in a 4-3-3, (the 3-0 pass in the 4-0 win vs Athletic Bilbao under Xavi Feb 27,2022). It makes sense and we progress the ball and isolate Lamine or shift the defensive block. Defenders backing off reduces risk of losing the ball and he isn't Frenkie who has a God given ability to take on a man face to face whenever he wants and that is ok. It is fine for our midfielders to have different strengths.
