Not at all. One legged limited players and lbs who can't cross like Balde should count themselves lucky to be playing for top clubs. But class fell drastically across the table so it is what it is.

Tale as old as time 'it was better in my day'.
We are harping back to a time when GVB got to a WC final and the full backs were Gio, Van Der Wiel an out of position Ramos and Capdevilla and a CL final where Oleguer was on other side of pitch from Gio while Arsenal had Eboue at RB.
Rose tinted spectacles about the good old days.

I wasn’t there to witness it but I heard Oleguer was such a big meme in the online discourse of the Rijkaard’s Barça era.

Below is a list of the full back pairings of the CL winning teams in the mid 2000s which pretty much covers Gios time at Barca.
Its a largely whos who of mediocre players and likes of Costacurta old and out of position.
2003 - RB Costacurta/LB Kaladze
2004 - RB P Ferreira/LB Nuno Valente
2005 - RB Steve Finnan/LB Djimi Traore
2006 - RB Oleguer/LB Gio
2007- RB Oddo/LB Jankulovski
2008 - RB Wes Brown/LB Patrice Evra

Also don't see the point comparing defensive and offensive full backs.
Abidal and Alves had different roles as did Oleguer and Gio.

Fullback is the only position on the pitch where it doesn't matter if you have no weak foot. You are always on the side of your stronger foot and don't have to cut inside on your weak foot.
Xavi had absolutely no left foot either as a central midfielder, so what?

Malvolio and Barcaman will look very silly by the time Balde is 28 or so. Old men stuck in the past, in their youth and glory days.
Balde played better in his breakout season. Players progressing season after season often does not happen.

Barca went out in semi finals conceding 7 with Gerard Martin.. not quite the same as winning it.
It proves that the standard of full backs back then was not as high as remember and it was not some golden age compared to now either.

That's false. His peak (so far) was in the second half of last season. We missed him big time vs Inter

If you want to look at other full backs who got to finals back then can see Eboue etc.
Quite clearly the standard of full backs for the top teams in Europe in mid 00s was weak and nothing like this golden age as made out.

2 assists, not 3. Could have been 3 if Garcia scored his chance. But he was also at fault for the late equalizer. had a mare in the first leg as well. You can't argue in good faith we did not miss his recovery pace vs Dumfries, who absolutely raped our backline

You put Oleguer there on your little list but forgot or did not watch at all because Belletti came on for him and thus Barca won that final.
