It's a double-edged sword. If he puts in a defensive shift while playing like a superstar he's not going to be able to play 90 mins twice a week.
I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up more and more like Messi, perhaps he won't reach walking state but he'll conserve energy throughout the game.
Last season his stats were meh but now he's getting the feel of providing G/A regularly and he will want to get as much as possible. Being subbed hinders that, so you could understand his frustration even if it's better to rest in the long run.
