Yes Messi has essentially won nothing. The olympic Gold has been won by Poland, Nigeria, Cameroon etc. It's an amateur trophy for the most part and for the most part no one cares about it. It's even a level below the confederations cup. -

Expanding to 24 teams isn't the problem. The issue is having 16 teams advance. Its a simple fix, winner of each group advances plus the 2 best runners up. Basically straight into the quarter finals like before. With this format no team plays for 3rd place like Slovakia did against England... -
