La Liga Round 30: Barca - Betis 1-1

Very well-organized defense by Betis. Very few gaps to exploit. And Barca's passing near the box simply isn't precise enough. Barca should have attempt more driving penetrating runs earlier in the game. Too much passing the ball around waiting for openings when there weren't any. Draw fouls...

    Copa semi-final: Barca - Atletico 5-4 agg.

Yeesh, that was painful to watch. Few bright spots other than Yamal and Torres in the first half. Just a mess of unforced giveaways and a foul every minute. Both Raphinha and Yamal with selfish shots in the 2nd half that were easy assists for their teammates.

    Eric Abidal

This. I can't recall Abidal making an unforced error. Alves was the beginning of the era of attacking fullbacks. In Pep's system, and with Messi on the right side, Abidal was to play a more conservative role.

    7 - Ferran Torres

Add FdJ to the list. Flick stopped him from his ball-dwelling and made him a much more aware and dynamic player who moves the ball quickly.

    7 - Ferran Torres

Credit to Ferran for sticking it out and improving.

    8 - Pedri

Excellent player, of course. But sometimes shows a lack of attacking desire, as in this moment when Yamal, who gave Pedri the ball a few seconds earlier, was available in space to receive the ball back (arrow shows where he could have passed). Pedri ended up dribbling backwards and getting fouled.

La Liga Round 27: Barca - Osasuna 3-0

What a terrific game. SO entertaining. That's the best energy I've seen from the team the entire season. The ball always moving. Every player making great pivots to evade their markers and advance the ball. Brilliant pressing and ball recovery. Great wall passing movement, runs seen and runs...

La Liga Round 28: Atletico - Barca 2-4

Watched the whole game and, of course, plaudits for hanging in there and changing it around (great strike by Lewy, and a sharp header by Torres, but a lucky deflection by Yamal). That doesn't negate the fact that the overall play was sluggish and even sloppy at times. Like training at...

La Liga Round 28: Atletico - Barca 2-4

Just finished watching. That was really disappointing play by Barca today that I would describe as lethargic and sloppy. Passes were rolled like a couple of tennis players lazily lobbing balls over the net in a warmup. No zip, and not accurate. Several passes were picked off from this lack of...

    Luka Modrić

Hate Real Madrid but it's impossible to hate this guy. What a stunning goal, perfectly executed.

La Liga Round 25: Las Palmas - Barca 0-2

Flick instructions to team: "I want all your goals today to hit the crossbar and bounce across the line. Capiche?" That was comical defending, leaving Ferran alone in the middle of the box.

What a nice cutback by Olmo, perfect control.

    Copa Round 16: Barca - Betis 5-1

Some takeaways from this game: FdJ has improved a lot under Flick. Never liked him, but this was a solid performance unlike anything before. Gavi is playing much more maturely. I've never liked Kounde but he and Yamal have worked out their overlap very well and have a good partnership...

    21 - Frenkie de Jong

I've never been a FdJ fan. I was curious if Flick could get him to improve. From what I saw today, he has quite a bit. His movement is much better, finding spaces to assist his teammates. His back-to-goal vision has improved, always scanning over his shoulders. He isn't dwelling on the ball...

    Hans-Dieter Flick

Roy Kent has left AFC Richmond and is now coaching at FC Barcelona.

    Premier League 24/25

Nice hat trick by Gabriel Jesus. Has always been a bit of an underrated player, imo. He has that singleminded desire and tenacity to score goals that one wants in a striker, good movement, and the technical ability to put away his chances.

    Andrés Iniesta

I miss him, too. The whole Pep-era team. But putting Neymar in front of Iniesta killed a lot of opportunity for Iniesta to show his talent. Neymar would either try to dribble his marker or hold the ball, slowing down the play. And Iniesta had to cover for him defensively as well. Turned him into...

    Andrés Iniesta

Love Iniesta, but this is a good example of the Neymar effect. Unfortunately, once Neymar was a starter on the left side, the effect was to relegate Iniesta to a much more static, deeper, boring support role.

    Pedro Rodriguez

I don't think he would have had any interest in coming back when he had the opportunity to be a starter at other top clubs. And he (justifiably) felt snubbed during the MSN era. If I recall correctly, his last action for Barca was coming on as a sub in extra time and scoring the game-winning...
