We’re stuck under a rock and a hard place. On the one hand, our best bet of selling him on for a decent amount relies on getting everything back to normal again. He’s our captain; therefore, he should be treated as such. Play him as if nothing ever happened and promote his value (to our club) in pressers and social media. Project greatness and confidence. Short term, of course.
On the other hand, if he were a regular Joe at a 9-17:00 desk job who continued fucking up while being tasked with a leadership role, chances are he’d get canned/demoted in a New York minute (with or without mental health issues).
Fact is, he isn’t worthy of the captain’s armband. He continues to get outsmarted/outplayed by opponents in big games. He talks back to referees while aware of the risks in doing so (I hope). He hides from the reality of his fuck ups despite being our captain.
A bit backwards perhaps from the talking points above mentioning mental disorder, but the heart in me would like to pursue breach of contract litigation for being unavailable in crucial matches, wage deductions, fines, stripping of his captain’s armband.
But the realpolitik guy in me prefers option one. Build him up in social media, promote him as one of our greatest defenders ever, and continue on as if nothing ever happened. Then sell him to the highest bidder in summer.
Real Oviedo may be interested? Or Wolves?
