35 - Gerard Martín

I feel like I am constantly being gaslit when it comes to Gerard Martin over here.

He's not good enough, even as a backup. He's awful under pressure in possession, slow and weak defensively.

His crossing is great *when not* pressed.

We obviously have to live with what we have to, but if we have to rely on Gerard vs. a good team then it will be like playing with 10 men. He's not a La Masia graduate either so that angle doesn't work either so keeping him for sentimental reasons makes no sense too. Not that it ever would make sense.

They even said that Farre and Virgili impressed Flick, just for them to be taken out of the Asian tour.
Last year they even said it about Valle

Perhaps but as we know, Valle was never even played in his natural LB position under Flick but at RB - natural that a coach has players he prefers

Virgili, perhaps there was little chance for him in 1st team knowing both Roony & Rashford were being added leaving little if any minutes for Jan

Shame, I think many of us had high hopes for him but can’t begrudge a player for wanting to play and not languish in 4th division

It seems Flick really believes in him - hope he has a stellar season and Torrents can cause a stirr when given chances.

He is a product of our poor finances. Nothing more. The position he plays in is one of our worst covered. And the coach is heavily offensive oriented and will prefer a bulked up offense at the expense of defensive signings.

So... his presence makes a lot of sense if you bring all the context pieces into the coversation.

What the club should do is stop fucking around and make some serious signings in defense. None of all that cheap loanees, or old players, or injury prone veterans, or whatnot. Easier said than done. Club doesn't have 100m + to invest into our backline like Madrid did this summer.

I do not agree with us neglecting the backline this summer... but it is what it is. ZERO signings in defense, so we go with what we had last season basically. That's why Martin is still around.

Maybe next summer we will find some resources to improve the defense. Keeper is important, but if defenders fuck up and leave the opponent in cheap 1 vs 1 situations... I'm afraid it's not enough.
