This afternoon Leo Messi extended his contract with FC Barcelona through June 30 of 2018. The signing ceremony was attended by the player, President Sandro Rosell, Vice-President Josep Maria Bartomeu and the Director of Football Andoni Zubizarreta.

Messi added two additional years to his existing contract, which was set to expire in June of 2016. The player, who joined the Club when he was 13 years old and made his first-team debut three years later, will be 31 when his contract expires.

Why does he have a snake around his neck?

As someone who's worked in business and has alot of first hand exposure to corporate, professional dealings, I always get a kick out of contract signing photos in the football world.

It's always a middle-aged man dressed in a classy suit, and a young footballer dressed in I don't even know what..

Apparently he refused to have his buyout c increased. Which is a little strange.

Yeah, I've been mulling that over for a few days since there have been some articles about it...Not sure what to make of that, does it matter?...And even if doesn't, why did he not want it raised?

He looks happier than Rosell too. Wonder how much Barca forked for a new deal.

According to Marca:

The Argentine was hankering after a pay rise to compensate for the Spanish government's decision to increase income tax, which would have seen him take a €1 million hit on what he earned last year. The club has responded by raising his basic salary to €12 million after tax every season through 2018.

What a bargain for FC Barca! He must actually be worth about what the rest of the team combined is paid. But this way, he can have the world's best teammates, and the team can abide by financial fair play. I'm sure Messi has all the money he could want from all of this other earnings.
