Griezmann was definitely a statement signing just to flex Barto's muscles, signing one of the best players in the league from a direct rival.

Problem with all three flops was that none of them was a plug and play into our system. There was hope of Dembele replacing Neymar at LW and Coutinho replacing Iniesta at CM but they never thrived there at their respective clubs, and of course didn't do it here either.

Griezmann at the time of signing had no clear position either. People were hoping he would go back to his Sociedad days and score goals from LW and CF. It was an incredibly dumb signing for that amount of money with Messi at the club. He was not the missing piece to our struggles.

Griezmann and Coutinho never really seemed like Barca players to me. Griezmann is a brilliant player, seems more at home in direct systems for some reasons, and Coutinho is very talented but sort of a number 10 in a world where numbers 10s don't really exist anymore (I know he can play off the left, too) is the type who needs a team built around him, which was never happening playing with Messi.

It's a shame, but Coutinho's sale really did fund and help Liverpool take the next step under Klopp to a team who rivalled City and were one of the best in Europe.

Buying Griezmann would have been sensible if we had sold Messi back then, given the fact that they both like to operate in almost similar areas of the pitch.

Even then, it wouldn't have made much sense, as Barca rarely played with 2 striker system and only did it for Messi. When Messi was let go, Griezmann was the worst player in the teams before going to Atletico, as he was put on the RW.

He is a great player but never for Barca. The only hope at the time was "great players can figure it out".

After Messi left Griezmann wanted out and Barca wanted him gone also.

Barely any point even pointing to that time as to what he could have been.

The season before he got over 30 goals/assists and played well.
