What era should he have been born in?
It was a soulrage reference/joke but when you think about it he'd be perfect in the previous era where second strikers thrived.

I think he's a better second striker than a pure striker. I believe he's at his best when paired alongside another striker/forward. He doesn't like playing with his back to goal.

Atletico are linked to Greenwood and these 2 together would wreck havoc in a Prime Atletico system.

I don't necessarily think he's at the wrong club at all. It's just that Simeone is kinda past it.

Yeah I could see that argument. Similar concept to the Owen Heskey era.

Unfortunately for Alvarez, Simeone hasn't moved on from that era and wants to play a double 9 for whatever reason.

I do want to see Simeone try a 4231 with Alvarez upfront with a Thiago Almada or Baena right behind him, but no chance Simeone will play that.

Would still work today with the right system. Should get Greenwood and pair him up with Julian.

People take formations wayyyyyyyy too seriously. It's more about the overall system and suitable players not the formation on paper. Besides both Julian and Mason can play anywhere across the frontline so the fluid permutations and combinations in possession within the right setup would be deadly to say the least.

Inter reached 2 CL finals out of the last 3 playing a 2 striker system with Martinez and Thuram. Both these players are nowhere near as fluid, tactically flexible or positionally versatile as Alvarez and Greenwood.

You can win with any formation if the system suits your squad and if the manager is talented.

I haven't really seen much of Greenwood so can't really comment on him.

I give you that of Inter, but at least Inter is competitive in the midfield led by a good tactician in Inzaghi to which ATM does not possess either, which are more problems that ATM has.

If I was Atletico manager, here's what I'd do: ⚪ 🔴 🔵

- Get Greenwood and Enzo

- Play a formation similar to 4312 on paper but very fluid in practice and application.

- Play Greenwood and Alvarez up top as a 2 with Baena or Almada behind them as the free roaming 10. Nico Paz would be a dream signing ngl.

- Will play Enzo as a DLP but alongside a proper DM. Players like Simeone Jr can be the workhorse in and around central and wide midfield channels kinda like Matuidi was for the 2016 and 2018 France teams.

They also need to be fundamentally more attacking against the lesser teams. There are no excuses anymore. Against the bigger teams, Alvarez and Greenwood can destroy them on the break.

A manager like Klopp would cook with this Atletico squad and transfer budget.
