Capello attacks Pep

🗣️ Fabio Capello claims that Pep Guardiola has negatively impacted football:

"You know what I don’t like about Guardiola? His arrogance. The Champions League he won with City is the only one where he didn’t try anything funny in the decisive matches."

"But all the other years, in Manchester and Munich, on key days, he always wanted to be the protagonist. He would change things and invent them so he could say: ‘It’s not the players who win, it’s me’. And that arrogance cost him several Champions Leagues. I respect him, but for me, it’s clear."

"Besides, even if it is no longer his fault, he has done a lot of harm to football. Because everyone spent ten years trying to copy him."

"It ruined Italian football, which lost its nature. I said: 'Stop, you don't have Guardiola's players'! There was also the absurd idea that that was all there was to do to play well."

"A disaster and also a boredom that made many people flee from football, they only have to watch the highlights, why are you going to watch 90 minutes of passes and horizontal passes without fighting, without running...?"

"Fortunately, football is changing. First of all, Spain changed it by winning the European Championship with two wingers and playing fast."

It's not Pep's fault because he was doing his job very well but teams trying to copy Pep has made the game very boring.

It's incredibly cringeworthy to watch teams like Burnley trying to play out from the back like they are Prime Barca and get relegated in style.

People copying Pep has led to the rise of system players and taken away all the individual brilliance, flair and magic from the game.

Pep destroys flair players. Mavericks never thrive under him. Grealish being the biggest example. Look at him now. Pep turned him into a boring possession recycling winger. He's one of the most exciting players in the league. He's a free spirit.

You need endless resources and the best players to make Pep's system work. Midtable clubs trying to play like Pep and conceding silly goals because of that is crazy.

Leagues like Serie A got worse because of this. They lost their unique tactical identity for a while. Capello is spot on about this.

Lastly, Man City have always been boring to watch. Pep's Barca and Bayern teams were much more exciting.

a lot of people I know/saw on internet that thought Barca played most boring football during their reign. I liked their style but people found those passes mundane and repetitive.

granted,I dont meet that many people...
I'm not a fan of that style and philosophy at all. Many people are though. It's down to personal preference.

Messi, Iniesta, Xavi and Alves had some delightful combination sequences though. It's an incredible level of technique and chemistry.

If you look at the highlights, it's incredible to watch.

Over a season, it can get repetitive and boring. If you want to watch boring Football, watch Del Bosque's Spain in this period. Barca had Peak Messi and Alves and were much better to watch than Spain.

A lot of people think that this style is very offensive and the most attacking form of Football. It isn't. Spain was a very defensive team. The possession play was also a defensive tactic. The more you keep the ball, the less chances the opponents can create. It wasn't just an offensive tool like the casuals think.

Pure Attacking Football is Flick, Klopp, Bielsa, Wenger, etc. 90 minutes of attacking free flowing Football.

Barca without Messi was nothing and Messi was nothing without Xaviesta. Or sth like that. Fook me.

anyway, no team was more hated in football history. By half of fans of all other teams.

I liked how they played,otherwise I wouldnt be on here,would I?

agree about the coaches you mentioned.

Yeah, sure. Prime Barca was boring but Wenger played pure free flowing football. And who doesn't remember all those classic Bielsa teams ... *let me check Wikipedia* ... ah, yes, prime 2013 Athletic Bilbao beautiful football when they finished 12th with -21 goal difference.

Well that's a weird thing for Capello to home in about.

Besides could have been worse, imagine if Capello balls done the same, and inspired a generation of coaches around Europe to play like him.

Instead it done the opposite, and got him sacked despite winning the Champions League.

Isn't the copycats destroying the world, not Guardiola? The coach should play the strategy what works for the team.

I agree on Guardiola losing the CL final vs Chelsea, because he went in overly cocky.

Dude started the CL final without a DM when he had Rodri and Fernandinho available. Massive L. 😂

Prime Barca wasn't boring. Spain was.
Spain weren't boring in Euro 2008 (admittedly before the Pep revolution and under Aragones) and they played some lovely stuff in Euro 2012 too, destroying Italy in the final (with caveats).

It's true that possession is also a defensive tactic, but it can also be casual to think that passing a lot until a gap opens up is boring. If you play football yourself you'll know the importance of combination play and moving teams about.

I also think you have a very black and white and romanticised view of Klopp and Wenger (who I both rate highly) if you think they played '90 minutes of free flowing attacking football'. Klopp played plenty of long ball nonsense and Wenger was happy to be defensive and employ hardman tactics when it suited him. I think you're letting your liking of them and dislike of Pep shape your opinions there.

You make some very good points but I think your dislike of the general possession football style is causing you to go a bit over the top too mate, and be black and white as if Wenger and Klopp never played defensive football. You cannot speak in absolutes like that.

Man City weren't boring either imo. The centurion team for me played the best football I have seen in England since I started watching the game.

As much as I like Klopp for example, his football was pretty basic at times, all 100 mph and trying to press high or play long balls. It was entertaining but is in no way better to watch than what Pep has showed, imo.
