9 - Robert Lewandowski

Back to topic: now we know the reasons for his problems at the beginning of the season

As Lewandowski emphasized in The Times, his injury problems in August were caused by “too much traveling and bus rides” during Barca's preseason tour in South Korea, which strained the nerves in his leg. Another problem was that the bed on the trip did not meet Lewandowski's standards, which is why he “couldn't sleep for two hours” and his muscles were tired as a result.

He was anything but one dimensional in his peak. His first 6 months at Barca was the last part of his prime and he was absolutely balling for Xavi before the World Cup. Not just goals.

Don't forget he's doing all of this as a washed up old man at Barca. Imagine Prime Lewandowski in Barcelona.
His link up play was almost nonexistent and he was getting battered by Spanish central defenders - but we can see now it was also more about the tactics, same player thrives in same situation but tactically different

It was painful with him, I can recall matches where he barely even got a sniff of the ball much less chance on goal. Now his chances are served on a platter and in abundance - he's clinical which we'd know if he was actually put in scoring position better in Xavi's setup

In terms of number of goals AND higher goal-to-chance ratio, nobody including Haaland matches Lewandowski in the last few seasons now.

His efficiency is unmatched.

His positioning and drawing in defenders gives Barca attack and mid more space to operate.

Yes, in that sense he's sort of a sacrificial lamb upfront, but there is a purpose to it.

What about him under Xavi pre World Cup?
Unfortunately, I would have to go back and review matches - I remember we turned a corner prior to the red card from Araujo in CL (Maybe January) where there was better use of Lewy, Raphinha & Lamine trident. But prior to that? I don't ever remember Lewandowski looking fluid in our team

Even now, while he is a sensational goalscorer he is not the best option due to his mobility limitations when facing high press and being slow to transition or dropping deep to receive the ball

But his positioning and finishing really shine under Flick's tactics

For all the talk of him being poor under Xavi in his last season, his numbers are pretty good.

49 games, 35 Goals Contributions ( 26 goals, 9 assist)

Last season
52 games, 45 goal Contributions (42 goals, 3 assist).

Not a night a day difference in total contributions, his goal scoring went up significantly, but he contributed less assist.

His first season just for a full stat line

46 games, 41 GC (33 goals 8 assist).

His first season his most well arounded if anything.

Anyways brilliant bit of business by the club to sign him, only thing I hold against him are the two misses against PSG.

He basically said that youngsters don't accept or give a fuck about him shouting. Because, he says, it's a different generation.

Which is funny really as Inigo said he regularly shouts at Balde, Kounde, Cuba and somehow they accept it and welcomed it.

I don't think he's referring to himself at all here. He's never been a shouter. Even when he's mad at someone he doesn't really shout much.

It's just a general commentary on the dynamics between players and coaches. This generation is really soft and precious so it makes sense.

He hasnt been worth 150m over 4 seasons and nothing at end of it.

Barca in Xavi league title win won near enough every game he missed and it was same last season and still scored a lot of goals without him.

Last season won every game he missed again and scored a lot.

Top clubs who deal with market well wouldnt be spending that much on Lewa and giving him that salary.
