21 - Frenkie de Jong

Sort of except it has a catch 22 where these young La Masia guys get so good so fast they get high wages before they really should.

Fati for example
Yamal recently
Aye mate, that was what I was thinking too.

These guys then get a high wage because they develop faster in La Masia than they would any other academy in the planet. So like you say it's catch 22. Then if Barca ever wanna sell some, they're on higher than usual salary.

I didn't mean just because of his age but mostly because of the situation with Gavi, Casado and specially Bernal. If Bernal become the real deal we could find ourselves in a situation where we're gonna have one of most expenive players on the bench and we know Frenkie isn't likely to agree for a transfer elsewhere. I hope that happen but it's easier to deal with it if Frenkie has a shorter contract but I doubt anyone in the club thinks so longterm. They'll probably just give him a 6 years contract because that is the best for FFP in this moment.
Rotation can help all of this. Good players don't need to start every single minute. Rotate those players and everyone can at least be somewhat happy.

Fair enough, and I agree. Nobody can really predict the future, but the job of Barca scouts and staff is to give it a really good go.

A longer contract is better financially but to me it's short-term gain to delay potential long-term pain. It's just kicking the can down the road.

It's not that I'm complaining, it's an amazing situation in the midfield with one top player like Frenkie and a top prospect like Bernal + great squad players like Gavi and Casado who could also play there. Pedri on the other position in a double pivot is untouchable of course.

I also hope/expect we'll go back to 4-3-3 eventually and I see only Bernal as someone who could master the lone pivot role. Maybe an older, more static Frenkie could change into that as well but for now we haven't seen that.

Yeah as a non-Barca fan you guys obviously know much more than me. I don't know if I have seen the boy Bernal play yet, but given the hype on here I am looking forward to it. He must be class.

No one really did, we're just guessing and hoping. He was good for last preseason but that's a small sample. We're just optimistic because of his status in La Masia and his body. This season will give a lot of answers about him.

Fair enough. Still a lot to happen then a very small sample size.

Let's see if he's as good as claimed. He's still only 18 (two months older than Lamine) and there's a lot of development still to happen. Hope fans won't turn on him if he starts season slow or is in and out the team.

One thing is certain, and it translates to most players: for a club so deep in debt, Barca seem to spend way too much on wages.
Yes, going forward, they need to be more mindful. It's difficult however to attract players when they know you're broke and unstable, without offering them a higher than average salary. Historical prestige only goes so far.

In Frenkie's case, if I took a paycut to help the team, I would expect to be paid back, in full. Extending the deferred salary over a few more years will help, but I wouldn't pay him a euro more above what his base salary is. No increase in base wage at all, despite being in his prime. I would of liked to actually decrease it, but you wont convince a player in his prime to take a salary cut.

Aye, been living in denial too. Beautiful city, sea, playing with Messi, under pep/Lucho, competing for trophies, whatever. In the end all that matters is dinero and Barca pays the premium and beyond.

He would leave if not a starter.

It all depends on how much he could earn elsewhere and Frenkie would get same more if decided to leave.

It is on club if want to then pay it.

Yeah. That's why noone should treat him as legend or family of sorts.
He's just another player that happens to be here for some years and earn shitloads of money.

That's all footballers, though.

Loyalty doesn't really exist in football. Unless the players benefits a lot too.

It's the way the game is.
