And globally, Liverpool are far bigger than Bayern. It's not even a contest.

Who cares about how many domestic trophies they have won when the Bundesliga has always pretty much been a one club league?

Haha it's pretty unfair to discount Bayerns domestic dominance, which was only possible due to their own brilliance. I could understand it if you were talking about PSG who were always a so so club until the mega petro dollars came in, but Bayern have dominated German football from pretty much the get go.

Liverpool are big, for me the biggest in England, but to claim they are 'far bigger than Bayern' is ridiculous. On what are you basing that? Is it the fact they have 30 percent more fans worldwide? Well most of that comes from outside of Europe, particularly Asia. The fans that ( until EPL clubs started sweeping them up ) were labelled as ' plastic glory hunters '.

Bayern have far far more authentic fans in Munich than Liverpool have in Liverpool. Even when Liverpool were the best team in the world in the late 70's they struggled to fill their 40 thousand stadium. Now of course they don't have that problem because the ease of travel means Anfield is full of fans from London, Ireland and Scandinavia.

Liverpool have the same UCLs as Bayern, 13 LESS league titles, less domestic cups, smaller stadium, less average attendance. When it comes to revenues Bayern is far far bigger with revenues of over a billion Euros compared to Liverpool's 700m. That 700m figure, being a club record as well.

And Bayern has managed all this without completely selling it's soul to a foreign sugar daddy. Bayern is still a 50 percent fan owned club, unlike Liverpool.

Or because Munich has three times the population of Liverpool and the second biggest club in Munich is in the German third tier, while the second biggest club in Liverpool is a mainstay of the top flight and has won a European trophy.

"Far bigger" was hyperbole. But with all respect to Bayern, I believe Liverpool are now bigger.

For a start, Bayern have no other big clubs in Munich to compete with. Liverpool have Everton, who, despite a lack of any recent success, used to be a genuinely top club and have a massive fan base of their own. Regardless, if Liverpool had a stadium that held 90,000 people it would sell out every week.

Secondly, the Bundesliga is setup for Bayern to win it as often as possible. Because 9 times out of 10 they will just buy Dortmund and Leverkusen's best players the moment those clubs have any domestic success. It was so funny watching them get humbled with German Golden Boy Wirtz, who choose Liverpool over them despite being offered less money.

Damn, didn’t expect Bayern to pay so much money for this guy.

As Barça also was rumoured to be interested, is he worth the money?

I mean okay, this market has highly inflated prices, but still.

He's still a very good player. But he had a bad injury the season before last and hasn't been quite the same since. I love his work rate and endeavour but my biggest gripe about him as a Liverpool fan is how wasteful he can often be. He would have so many assists if he would just lift his head up and pass every so often. He's going to drive Harry Kane nuts.

75 million for a guy who's past his peak, Liverpool definitely got themselves a great deal. But he will improve Bayern for a couple of seasons.

Not taking a side in the debate, but to be fair with this English clubs and Liverpool do the same - they take players from other clubs lower down the food chain in England. Yes, Liverpool can't really take from Arsenal or Man City, but that's because of the financial strength of those clubs. The smaller clubs have good financial strength too but look how Liverpool have gutted clubs like Southampton in the past.

I don't like what Bayern do either, but Liverpool are hardly innocent or the good guys when it comes to weakening competition.

As for this, I often feel there's wastage in football and clubs and staff just buy for the sake of it.

I don't know the full details of Sane's transfer, or if he wanted to leave. But he is actually more talented than Diaz, and only a year or two older. This seems like Bayern have spent a lot of money on a sideways step and decent player who won't really move the needle. Yes, it's their money, their choice, and they can afford it, but this seems a microcosm of a wider thing in football where clubs spend fortunes on players who aren't even much if at all better than what they previously had, and who don't help them improve much anyway.

I think a lot of football fans like shiny new toys. They love to see fresh faces and new transfers, and even the directors and scouts feel similarly, or at least try to appease the fans. That's why we see players traded and transferred all the time, even though much of the time the team barely gets better than they were before. Yes some clubs really make strides and win a lot, but it's not the norm.

There are always going to be winners and losers in football though, as that's the nature of a league table, so I suppose my argument is biased as every club signs and half the league has to finish in the bottom half - so I will always be able to point to teams that spend a lot and fail.

Good post.

I think you are missing the motivation factor though. New team, new destination, new motivations for the player themselves compared to an existing player who may or may not have won it all already at said club or league.

So sometimes it is best to know when and who to move on even if both players are a similar level.

Aye I did think about that, just was looking from the clubs' perspective. From a player's perspective it can make sense to move for their career and better money and contracts. And like you say that benefits the club if incoming player has more hunger than outgoing.

I think in general a lot of players profit more from moves than the clubs get in return. But as I say that is normal. Only one team can win a national title, only one team can win the CL, etc.

Well, if I am looking at Diaz and Sane, the obvious difference is availibility (injuries) and motivation more than anything.

I think Diaz will be great for Bayern and in Germany. Just that his fee is quite high and, for me, I do not find him an exiting player.

True

Don't get me wrong, I do rate Diaz. But I would rather have a fit, available, fully motivated, prime Sane, even if he disappointed at times too. Feel the upside is higher. He could also play both sides.

However, as you say, a fit and available and motivated Sane is a pipedream, so better to bring in a player who is hungry and always available. Like they say, the best ability is availability (though you don't want a rubbish player who is always ready to play either as that is pointless).
