European Super League

| JUST IN: The European Super League is now underway. The three founding clubs (Madrid, Bar?a and Juve) have contacted more than 50 clubs in the hope of creating a new 60-80 team European tournament which will replace UCL. [@TeleFootball] #fcblive

60-80 teams? WTF they mean?
Do they mean 60-80 teams that could potentially take part in the final stage of two 10 team groups?
Surely they don't mean a format including 80 teams, that's hardly better than the current CL

60-80 just means lower divisions/leagues or some sort of qualifications these teams would take part of

Hope so.

More than 20 teams in the highest stage would defeat the purpose of having the best playing against the best

Making sure it's an open competition, and not a closed one, which rising teams can join should always be secured, but at the same time, the relatively small number of teams competing for the trophy is what will make it special

After criticism, they are forced to take into account small clubs. That's why they talk about 60-80. The Champions League, in fact, starts only now and there are no longer a number of the strongest clubs in it. I think their goal has remained the same - a super tournament with top clubs. There will be success and money, other clubs will come. No England? There will be a match between the winner of the Super League and the Premier League.

It's so dumb. The Super League should just be the top 4-5 teams from each top 5 league (All the big clubs basically) and 1-2 other well known teams from other leagues. Then have a pro-rel like system within this elite league where the bottom teams gets kicked back to their respective domestic leagues and compete to get back in again.

After the league campaign, the top 12 or 16 teams can then go into an immediate knockout playoffs style format and fight for the #1 spot.

Portugal, Spain, Italy is enough to start with. Question is does the collective tv rights deal of a league with the top teams of each country exceed that of the CL currently?

If the answer is yes then go for it. Remember that the tv rights and sponsorship sales of the SuperLeague can actually be less than the CL yet the teams can actually make more. Why? Because UEFA share is removed.

Prove the model works and other top leagues in Europe will want to follow. Forget England and let them live in their own little bubble. Have the money circulate in Euros and benefit the EU. England are not even in the EU anyways, so these countries shouldn't want to see the monies exit the system and be collective in pounds.

My problem is, if part of the argument for ESL is to counter oil clubs, perhaps don't include them in the project.

Alternative is strict FFP where the rich get richer and no one can ever challenge them.
