To be honest, if I was him I would have absolutely no interest in negotations. Appoint reliable personnel who are responsible of getting the absolute best deal possible, in this case even his father is involved. They believed they could get 10m, they asked for it. I can't see Leo asking "papa, please I need 10m".

It's not too uncommon that players who quit lose out on much of their fortune because they don't know how to take care of it.

Agreed on the second paragraph but players are like every other human being, seeking out the best for themselves, or greedy shall we say. I can see Messi wanting to horde some rich and wanting the 10m bonus, but you could be right, it could be a demand from his father. However, demands like private box for him and Suarez, private plane flights to Argentina etc. were definitely from him, I am sure.

things have to even out eventually. was the best deal ever that we got for free basically, even when considering the wages, commissions and everything we paid him while here.

even if we paid 1.5B for him(which surely is not true), if you spread it over 20 years then it would mean we paid 75M a season to have him. i think it is something like 50M a season though. guaranteed that any club in the world would take that deal right now.

it's not like he wasn't best in the world in 2019. and contract was signed in 2017. he was in his prime back then. also, market evolved with time. neymar move and all clubs getting much more money than when messi was 24.

What a piece of mental gymnastics and sophism!

You can't divide the whole sum of his wages over his whole career the way you want to.
If Barto was not a stupid imbecile, and had never offered him that ridiculous and insulting to the club and its history contract Messi eventually signed, then 'the investment' in him would have been just fine.
Whatever he offered in his last contract did more harm than good to the club.
The Valverde leagues hid the fact that the team was done at top level, rotten to the core and needed a rebuild.

(Not that I think he would have left then. He would have compromised to a much lower contract, because he wanted to never leave the club)

Like Messi can't afford himself a private box or a private plane. The best thing is that in 20 years we never saw Messi (when he wasn't playing) in any private box or VIP section, he was always sitting next to the bench.

As popular as Messi was, I think casual football fans are easily swayed. Camp Nou is close to packed even against your Elche's, shirts are selling like hotcakes and sponsors still want to sign with us.

As long as the club is doing fairly well, fans will spend time and money on the club.

Lol. Camp Nou got full in the Rivaldo or Ronaldinho days. And will get full after Messi.

It's just that we never got to that level of club sporting/financial succes and stature, before Messi.

Yes, we had stars in the past and yes we weren't a small club before Messi. But let's not talk shite like he ripped us off when he put us in line for best club side ever. Biggest revenue, biggest shirt sales, biggest sponsorship contracts were all in his era.

It was great when he took us to football heaven and we obliterated any side, with sensational football. Now that he is no more we counting the pennies he was receiving and calling robbery.

Setien, a manager worse than Tata Martino.

It doesn't matter if he is worse than Tata, or how do you rate him

It matters that he witnessed first hand Messi's behavior on and off the pitch, in the locker room, and in trainings.

And that matters.
Sorry to spoil your dreamy-land

A guy who simps for Dumbele and loaths the best player ever. And he thinks he know football. What a tool. Sums up the current football "fan".

Setien acting all misterious, doesn't tell us anything of his first hand experience. But suddenly you found out the secret and know for sure what happened.

Would hope Messi told Setien he is a bum. Otherwise I would think less of him.

A shame one of the most gifted footballers of all time is such a mediocre human being. Messi could've been a true role model, but he's just a mixed bag overall. Not much in him worth admiring other than his football talent.

Pep leaving hurt his career tremendously.

Messi would be a disastrous manager. For his sake, after he retires, he'd better walk away from football.

Shit club confirmed contract was true

Official club statement: FC Barcelona expresses its indignation at the interested leak of information from El Mundo that would be part of a judicial proceeding.

Means Messi would have retured at Barca if it weren't for him being stubborn

When negotiating a renewal with Bartomeu, in addition to the pay rise in 2022, Leo Messi demanded a clause in which it stated that in case the Spanish government raised taxes, the club would have to compensate the difference so that the player would still end up earning the same net salary.

? @elmundoes

Has this ever been done before?

Leo Messi's entourage broke negotiations with Barcelona over a contract renewal in July 2020 when the club refused to lower his release clause to ?10,000 and give him a signing bonus of ?10m.

? @elmundoes

Why did the club refuse to budge on the release clause and signing bonus?

Did they think Messi would use the club to renew with a bonus and then leave for PSG a year later for free?

No Messi

Tell me you wouldn't...

You're welcome

Unlike Valverde.

They should get to the bottoms of how El Mundo obtained this trove of information from an ongoing investigation.

Aye

It's a stunning leak though

Calls Messi a liar essentially for saying he wouldn't have renewed under Barto

Really seems like the fax was leaving for money

Oh Messi
