Barto’s interview with MD:

"Yes, Barcelona is a favourite to win the Champions League. We're favourites to win any competition that we participate in."

"The coach and the players have taken some time to do self-criticism and it has served positivity and eagerness."

"We had a strong rival in Madrid, who beat us, but it's also true that the management of the VAR was not the most adequate in this last section of La Liga, and the best league in the world deserves a VAR to match that."

"The VAR is a very powerful tool, but in the same or similar situations they have had different outcomes in different games."

"I have an excellent relationship with Xavi and we talk about many topics. But next season Quique Setien has a contract and we trust in him."

"The coaching staff must communicate with the players, exchange opinions and reflections and this unites the group."

"Messi is a player who's very ambitious, he wants to win."

"This team is very competitive."

"Dembele will surprise at Barca in a season with no injuries. He's had real bad luck."

"The coaches mostly decide who we sign, not us."

"Messi has said many times that he wants to retire here and I have no doubt that he will renew."

"Ter Stegen's renewal is among our priorities right now. Not only for his quality as a goalkeeper but for his personality as a player, his way of being. He's an example for everyone in the dressing room."

"Suarez has a contract that, depending on the number of games he plays, automatically renews for the 2021-22 season."

"Yes, we have spoken to Inter Milan for Martinez, but negotiations are parked right now."

"We already have seven new signings. Pedri, Trincao, Fernandes, Pjanić, Araujo, Fati and Riqui."

"Pena trains continuously with the first team and he has a future at Barca."

"Elections will be held in 2021.”

"We're close to agreeing a deal for the title rights of the Camp Nou. It's a solidarity project to help COVID-19's research. I look forward to announcing it when the Champions League ends."

So, basically, if the coach wants to do something and the veterans don't agree, things don't get done..

This is exactly what happened since Setien came. The managers came with their ideas (good or bad, it doesn't even matter), veterans didn't like it, kicked up a fuss, then the board called the manager to defuse the situation. The managers accepted the compromise, since they're not exactly swimming in offers. Same as Valverde case really, except Valverde was way more submissive and obedient.

What does "defuse the situation" mean? Messagge of the meeting is don't go against the veterans.

Meaning of this? The veterans effectively run the team.

Imagine Capello or Mou or LVG or Magath...
Players that came to them to "exchange" ideas and "discuss" tactics?

What a sad way to run the team. Defuse the situation. Jesus... What a downfall.

It's basically to Setien: "Look we'll keep you for another year if you don't rub the seniors the wrong way".

Basically like a supervisor.

It's basically to Setien: "Look we'll keep you for another year if you don't rub the seniors the wrong way".

This wouldn't work if we hired managers with many options. This works only with likes of Valverde, Setien, managers who don't have anywhere else to go but way down after Barca.

Top managers have a "my way or the highway approach". You either give them full powers or they don't even come in the first place. Because they know they will soon get a managerial job at some other top 10 team.

Likes of Setien, Valverde, are easy to corner into a situation where they accept compromise. Resulting in them being only half-managers. If they want to change some things that rub the veterans the wrong way, they'll not even mention it, because they know the veterans will react in a negative way.

There is a reason we don't have this type of managers anymore. For better or worse their approach won't work nowadays.
Managers ability to handle the egos of players is like 50% of his job in big club.

No offense khaled_a_d, but our veterans are a combination of ego, laziness and self-entitlement that is impossible to be handled even by likes of Pep or Klopp.

I give them this next season to prove us they can still win, at least on domestic level. If Madrid repeat the Liga next year, the veterans are totally done.

Right now, things are pretty clear. The pressure is on them big time.

Also, I hope you don't think EV had the ability to manage egos. The ability to manage egos is to impose your ideas and make the veterans apply them on the field. This is not what EV did. EV gave them the reigns of the team.

That bit with Pique flat out insulting EV and then bragging about it in the media tells you everything you need to know about how respected or valued EV was in reality. They loved him because they could do pretty much as they pleased with him.

I didn't even speak about our veterans, just stating that this type of coaches went to extinction.

Not at all. It is one of the defining traits of elite managers. That profile of manager is very rare. True. Extinct? No way.

Pep, Klopp, Simeone, Zidane all share power and ultimate executive decision in the team.

They should be done either way. Our veterans are pushing 35.

What are the odds of Fernandes staying out of that group? probably low I have to imagine but I will be shocked if he ends up staying.
