Ronaldo's career was respectable enough to be mentioned as top 3 if not the best striker to have played the game. It wasn't a "what if", his goal ratio is 0.61 or something like that.

He also played in the best league(arguably) in his prime against some of the best defenders in history. All of them named him as the toughest opponent they ever played against.

The argument would be his longevity.

So the argument is is that R9 gets downgraded for something completely beyond his control, a career ending knee injury. How is that fair?

How does that negate the fact that he was one of the best finishers and dribblers ever, who scored goals for fun and single handedly carried Inter and Barca for years?

Anyone who saw him play knows that a fully fit R9 would have dominated football until his mid 30s, comfortably.

Well no shit. Life isn't fair.

Marco van Basten's career ended at 27. He had already won 3 Balon d Ors.

Why isn't he getting enough shouts for the best striker ever?

Van basten
Ronaldo
Romario
Muller

The greatest strikers ever, how your rank them mainly comes down to personal preference.
One often gets overlooked because of the relatively small clubs he played for so I'd like to mention him in the same company.

EL Angel Gabriel Omar BATISTUTA.

Edit : Maybe El Matador Mario Kempes as well. Underrated, but maybe pushing it a bit amongst this company.

Totally agree ! just ask Maldini or Nesta or whoever you want
For me R9 1 year with us and the 1. year at Inter without any doubt and by far the best striker I've ever seen.
The injury ruined his career, he wasn't the same player he used to be.
But he still could lead Brazil to the WC triumph.
