Yup, the Foster design was better and should have been done a long time ago. Now we are screwed by the high interest rate, high material costs and the financial hardships paralyzing the club.

Madrid had all the stars lined up for them: Low interest rates, lower material costs and COVID stadium closures.

We should have built another stadium simply. ( since we re rebuilding apparently from scratch ). The presence ( or lack thereof) of fans in the espagnol stadium is abysmal and costly. ( add to that the cost of destroying the old stadium)

We should have, logically speaking, but the Camp Nou is one of the most legendary stadiums in football history.

Probably only rivaled by the Maracana, Azteca and San Siro.

Does this club even have enough fucking fans in Barcelona? Montjuic's attendance vs Cadiz was just 40,000. One proper club for the entire city and they can't even fill it out.

We shall see on the 16th against Betis when Spaniards are back from vacation and more infrastructural (I assume) work has been done around Montjuic.

In theory any Stadium rebuild should have been while Mini Estadi still around, with its landsale then used to fund it.

Building a new stadium is a much more costly adventure with buying land for cosmic sum and involving local politics (and corruption likely). Something what Real Madrid didn't do as well during their rebuild.

Generally not a great idea to build a new stadium on the outskirts of the city (the cheapest model of new stadia) as attendance will go down for nearly a decade until new residential areas are built around and city infrastructure.

Here is a thread presenting the problem:
There is a global trend where old stadiums filled with history and character are being demolished to erect the very same mega-stadiums

I ain't gonna lie, those stadiums look nothing alike. Especially real Madrid and Barcelona's.

Real Madrid stadium looks like a toilet seat where as nou Spotify camp Nou is going to be beautiful.

Honestly though, who cares about the outside appearance of stadiums? The only time you can get a proper view of that is during the broadcast for 5 seconds when they show that camera angle before the match. Stadiums look pretty different from the inside thanks to seats and shape so it's fine.

Modern architecture is just shit, no matter what you look at. Aesthetics and 'fengshui' is just non existing for our current purely utilitarian and cost effective zeitgeist.

Gotta say - Montjuic is a nice stadium. Let's hope this season becomes memorable (in a good way) to reminisce about the ground when we come back to Camp Nou next year

Montjuic reminds me a bit of the 2015 CL final where we beat Juventus 3-1. Olympiastation Berlin, only smaller of course. On TV at least it looks similar.

All that time and money wasted and for what? A lick of paint and 5,000 measly extra seats, which they will hardly ever fill.

The state of the Nou Camp hardly stopped people coming to games this year either did it. Highest average attendances in Europe.

Is this all worth it? The hundreds of millions spent when we can't find 10m for Real Vallidolid's reserve right back. Pfft, not for me.
Multiple locations to relocate to a new site was studied, the most promising was a land swap deal with the grounds owned by the university a km south west of Camp Nou. A site located next to the harbor was also studied, eventually both were discarded.

Doing nothing to Camp Nou would cost the club millions in repair costs every season just to keep the stadium open, in 2021 they had do spend 2 million euros just so they could open the stadium as it would have been closed by the city hall if repair works had not happened. Camp Nou being a 65 year old stadium and a dilapidated pile of junk after decades of wear and minimal upkeep, FC Barcelona had no other option than to either renovate the stadium or move.
