I think it's by law. I believe if the club refused to release the player any match the player participate in it considered a lost or something along those lines. Points can be docked and stuff.

It wasn't a kit. The color are always yellow shirt/blue shorts and blue shirt/white shorts. But because of fifa rules, they couldn't play in blue shorts because the other team also had blue shorts. So Brazil couldn't wear blue shirts or shorts. That horrible combination will surely happen again.
