Because he's been average since last season. You get more out of Shelvey than you do Gerrard.

He was our best player against Utd, had another good performance today, scoring another goal. Gerrard is anything but finished.

Chances created is a dodgey statistic to look at though. Downing and Henderson have very good chance creation stats, but that doesn't mean they're great players. You have to take into account how many times they lose the ball, or try things unnecessarily. It's that sort of thing that will make a system like Rodger's break down.

You do realise you're talking about Steven Gerrard and not Stewart Downing?

Steven Gerrard creates clear cut chances. And Gerrard's pass completion is well in the 80 percent which is quite incredible for an attacking player that plays risky passes.

80% is poor for a central midfielder in a possession-based system. Whether he's good at pinging Hollywood balls or not is beside the point, he shouldn't be doing it to begin with. He's a relic. The sooner Liverpool look for an alternative the better for them.

6th highest player in the league for the number of passes made.

That's actually some decent stats for a relic.

85% pass completion rate is not good, and I've already explained about the chance created stats. A hoof into the box one of your players gets a touch on is a "chance created". The only surprising and worthwhile stat is the passes made one. Still doesn't change the bigger picture. Gerrard's style is at odds with Rodger's, and for the good of the team and it's system as a whole, a replacement needs to be found sooner rather than later. In fact, he'd probably do more for you as a false number 9 than a trequartista.
