2011-2012 CL Final: Bayern - Chelsea

Unreal match. Bayern had every chance to keep the cup at home. The were tactically absolutely superior - they did it better than Barca b/c they were so much more variable in their attacks, with Müller roaming around, them taking outside shots, putting crosses in, cutting in from the flanks etc. Also defensively completely safe: Chelsea had a single successful attacking move, when Kalou shot at the end of the 1st half. Tymoshuk and Lahm were enormous, their marking of Drogba (with Tymo standing next to him preventing passes and Boateng backing up behind) was perfect and kept Drogba out of the game. Same for Kroos and Schweinsteiger taking turns.

However, converting chances is still an important factor in football. And thats where they failed. I hope they learn from it and maybe get a striker thats good in the box and can touch and control a ball.

Well, so much for the game. I think i watched all CL finals since the mid 80ies, and Chelsea were the worst finalist ever. I wouldnt even consider them being good defensively - you can hardly do that after seeing them take 43 shots. Cole was good, the rest wasnt worthy of being in a CL final. It still worked out and winning them the cup - which is sth that leaves oyu completely puzzled ...

After looking back in the game. It seemed to me Bayern were a bit too cautious of Chelseas counter attacking abilities and did not play quite as attacking as usual. Well thats what it seemed like to me

Imo they had the absolute perfect balance between attacking and defending. They took 43 shots ... does that sound very cautious?

To me it seemed as if they were content to taking it to PK, I think they had the right balance but I think they could have made better chances if they went even more attacking but that would obviously leave them more exposed to counter attacks.

Well, ok i get it now. You refer to the ET. But that was sth different. They lost both Müller and Ribery and just didnt have the personel anymore to keep attacking. And other players were ofc getting exhausted after 90+ minutes. Wasnt about them being cautious, they just couldnt go anymore.

@el tren

Do you think Rafinha should have started last night?

Okay, Contento had a fine game. But playing Lahm, who's obviously better attacker than the youngster, would have given that tactical advantage for Bayern(because the dirty scum bags started a full back at LW to counter Lahm) and the surprise element playing to their advantage IMO

No, was absolutely right to play COntento, who had a good game. ALso Lahm was offensively very strong (making him the overall best man on the pitch imo) and keeping him aside Robben was also the right thing to do.

Rafinha is also a good attacker down the right no? At least Ribery would have had better support if Lahm played on the left? And Robben would have had Rafinha, which is not too bad

I think Contento offered good support 1st half. And note that Lahms support at the left is limited, b/c he cant overlap and cross from the run as he is right footed.

And well, Rafinha didnt convince me at all ...

On tuesday, I believe, there's the Holland - Bayern match. I'm sure not a single Bayern player is looking forward to that, and Van Marwijk neither. I can see it being a game devoid of action.

Bayern should have done the same eh? Sit back relax and let the opponents run at you... Block all the space and when you get the ball loft it forward to wards Gomez and let him do the rest of the work. That would have been such a spectacle, especially since the opponents were Chelsea!!
Not only Bayern i thought what would have happened if we played a little cautious in both the legs.

Nope, they did as good a job as Barça if not better with their width...Didn't give Gomez many crosses but he did sort of bobble the opportunities he did have...Are the local press skewering Heynckes for subbing of Müller prematurely?

You could see heavy legs even after the 70th minute...Unlucky in the end but so was Barça

Sometimes, not often, the inferior side gets the result on big occasions like this

Who were you most impressed with as well as least, el tren?

I'd say, for me, at least, I thought Robben & Müller were able to routinely create danger even if Arjen missed the pk...The hogrider blew a great counterattack with numbers late in the match but I thought Ribery did the least to enhance his reputation along with Mario who probably was the goat for all the chances he had

Ribery & Robben are good players but assholes too. Gomez needs to learn basic ball control. Those 2 first half misses were POOR!

Heynkes cant be blamed. Its normal you want some extra defensive cover if you're leading 1-0 and there's only a few minutes left.

Boateng was the culprit for me. Just let Drogba get away so easily-seemed to flinch and cower when he saw DD coming.
