Villa

he played for mediocre teams and still consistently scored as if he played for an elite club.

nevermind his epic record for Spain.

There's no way to choose one without being unfair to the others.

RVN was a monster in two different top leagues, won titles with both and was top scorer in both. Simply a monster.
E'too was a beast also in two leagues, although not as consistent throughout the whole decade as others, was better than all at his best. Oh and of course won the treble with 2 different teams.
Villa was amazing at both international and club level. His consistency while playing for a non-mega club is freakishly impressive, and of course the small matter of being his nation's all-time top scorer and leading them to WC glory.
Henry is probably the only player that can be compared with E'too at his best, simply unplayable. His consistency at such an unplayable level was unreal, less impressive with Barca but still helped win the treble.

Nothing much between those guys IMO...

Also, interesting that none of these players ever won the FIFA World Best Player award...

I love Eto'o, and his Double Treble remains a miracle, but...

...234 goals in 442 games for Sporting, Zaragoza, Valencia and Barcelona since 2001.
...at least 20 goals every season for 10 years.
...47 goals in 76 games for Spain since 2004.
...2 Copa del Rey's with Zaragoza and Valencia, 1 Lliga + 1 CL & their respective Supercups in his first attempt with Barça
...1 European Championship and 1 World Cup, whilst being top-scorer in both.

you can't fuck with that CV for balance & consistency. two things every striker should have. Eto'o's Double Treble is a high water-mark, but he's had lows too. and he's disappointed for Cameroon despite scoring plenty. I know, I know, you'll say his team-mates are shit. and you're mostly right. but when his team-mates were good he was very much on the periphery of things. now he's at the front he scores, but never in the truly big clashes (which is weird coz that's his thing).

Villa, on the other hand, basically dragged a tired/injured Spain kicking & screaming to the World Cup Semi-Final. firing Spain out of choke-mode (at the WC and in general) cannot be underestimated. after Xaviesta, he deserves the most credit of any Spaniard for the recent dominance.

...221/333 for United and Madrid ( 66% to Villa's 53%)
...At least 20 goals for 7 / 10 years.
...33 goals out of 58 games for The Netherlands
...1 Prem league title with United, 2 Liga titles with Real, 1 FA cup, 1 Supercup
...Top UEFA scorer 3 times, EPL top scorer, and a Pichichi

Pretty fucking impressive as well.

None of the above striker dominated two Elite leagues the way he did.
If his national team was as good as Spain he would've at least had a Euro to show for his excellent record with the national team.

Like I said there is very little separating these strikers...

Could be said for Zlatan as well. Dominated 2 elite leagues and delivered titles everywhere. Assists as well as scores.

Carried team singlehandedly on club league level. shame that his charm does not extend to the continental level.

What other Elite league did he dominate other than the serie a? which barely qualifies as one anyways...

La liga? His presence brought about the Pedro. Also, he was leading the team during the first half of the season.

People do not give him as much credit as he deserves. He led a MUCH weaker AC Milan team to a title. Inter had a much better squad and yet, it was him that single handedly led the first half charge for AC Milan.

Also if you are going to use the old squad excuse for Inter, it is worth noting that AC Milan had a first XI that was, few years on average, older than Inter Milan. Inter that had won the treble a year before.

If you are going to bring his conflict with Guardiola into this, you have to realise that unlike Eto'o, he never attacked FC Barcelona as an institution, repeatedly.

Not going to downplay his achievements in serie a, but in no shape of form did he ever come close to dominating La Liga. He was decent for us the first half, and that's about it, not even remotely close to the level Ruud reached in both leagues.

Decent is a massive understatement. He has had the same amount of assists as he has goals in the league.

Also, to further extend this debate, he has had a better record than David Villa (in terms of stats) when you compare their debut seasons whilst playing a fewer amount of games than the latter.

Only thing that goes against Ibra is that his role in the team was so crucial that if he sucked, he looked disjointed from the team but if Villa sucked (as seen in last game), he just gets by unnoticed cause his role is not as crucial to the team as weird as that may sound.

Saying he dominated La Liga would be a massive overstatement as well...

The amount of goals he had during the first half masked his true performance on the pitch, which was more of a '80 minutes of MIA and 2 or 3 minutes of brilliance' kind of performance...

Anyways what he did in Italy is nothing short of amazing and that's why he is even considered in this debate.
Italy suits his style...
