Lionel Messi - v7

He's too slow for 1-2s. One has to have ability to move with quickness for these plays, but Messi is slowest player at Barca. It's the same with him trying ridiculous dribbles that never work anymore. He refuses to believe he's past it.

It's like he is actively making sure that we have to make it harder on ourselves to score than any other team in the world.

Whenever we are moving forward with momentum, he insists on dropping deep instead of moving with the flow and searching for spaces when the opposition is unbalanced. This is how every other team in the world scores goals. Attacking with momentum. This is how any other offensive midfield or winger finds his moments of incursion. When the attacking is flowing and the opponent is unsettled.

But no.

Messi insists on looking for a way through only when the entire other team has settled into a balanced defense. Only when the difficulty is at the absolute max can we attack.

Yes he's the only one creating against a bus but that's because we play against a bus. Coutinho and Griezmann come from teams that attack with gusts of collective force. They're used to either going for it or not. As is literally any team in the world.

Attacking against a bus is an entire skillset of its own. There are very different demands for decision making. Your instinct of whether to attack or not is thrown off.

Watch how we play when Messi is not on the field. Less sophisticated, sure, but we transition quicker, find better spaces for eachother and attack with much more momentum. The thing is, if we do that, we don't need a Messi to find an impossible pass. Because that's what every other team does and none of them have Messi.

Cant be the slowest, i mean, Busquets is still in the team.

We need to ask ourselves why Messi never ever finds himself in the positions that normal attackers score from. Why is he always up against three opponents when Ronaldo finds himself with one?

Why is he constantly drifting towards the left side of the box when he is more dangerous from the right?

Why is he refusing to search for spaces before the opponent has settled into a comfortable position?

There is some serious anxiety-related mental issues going on with his game.

Messi cant play like Ronaldo, because he is short and because he is no longer quick, if he tried to play like a striker it would fail.
Could he try to search for spaces more? Sure, but he cant do it in the way a striker does it, CAM is his optimal role.

Because he has developed a habit of dropping back (not his fault) to help create, partly it is because (when he plays) our midfield doesn't do much to create chances and partly it is because he is not Ronaldo type of player who can wait inside the box for service, he is part of the culmination and creation of the attacking game.

Also because he can't run or doesn't want to run these days, he'd rather try to dribble or play quick 1-2's to beat defenders than search for spaces to receive a pass.

Not saying he should be a striker at all. Nor make runs down the wing.

for those who worry that no one would want Messi on their team,
the fans in the City forum are unanimous in saying that after seeing Messi yesterday they would like him 100%.

That should make everyone happy in here, right? (pro Messi and anti Messi)

It would, if the fans reflected what Pep and Abu Dhabi are thinking

Either way, this isn't something I'm worried about because he's going to walk for free anyway. So for those who want to see him and Barca part ways, I don't really see how it matters now whether any team wants him or not, because as long as he's walking for free he can go wherever he wants, and not to mention, the fact that he's walking for free makes him irresistible. If Messi didn't play for Barcelona all these years and was a United player, are you really telling me that we wouldn't be dying to have him for a year or two in the hopes that he can come here and rejuvenate himself and the team?

According to WhoScored, Messi's rating without scoring a goal was like Ronaldo's with 2 goals.
Bar?a had more possession and 19 shots on goal compared to 9 shots by Juventus.
However, Juventus does not have naive / inexperienced / stupid (?) centerbacks that cause unnecessary penalties.
Was it really the right decision to spend big money on Griezmann instead of going for De Ligt? Missing Piqu? is a bigger deal than most fans think.
It was infuriating to see how Griezmann won a penalty but did not get it because he was too lazy to come back and therefore was offside when receiving the pass.
As to Messi, something is off with his shooting, both regarding accuracy and power. He frequently shoots right at the keeper, something he never did in the past. Buffon did a nice job, but Messi made it too easy for him.

Since 2003-04, Messi's seven shots on target were the most a player has had in a single Champions League match without scoring. His 11 in total was also the most in a game without scoring in the competition.
