11 - Ousmane Dembélé - V1

Messi has the best ground defense. He just choose NOT to play defense most of the time by walking around. This was exploited well by Roma.

recently? Did Dembele ever play good defense?

Today he decided he wanted to play defense the last second and caught up to Gaya's head start with his sheer speed. Naturally he had a hard time containing his own speed on the tackle. Raw talent with bad discipline.

Hopefully he will improve defensively.

Dembele’s purpose is to be constant threat in attack and not to cover back of Sergi Roberto. It was stupid tackle but problem is in Froudverde and his tactics and not Dembele. He is ruining Dembele BIG time! I hope someone in the club has enough brains to realize this clown is ruining club assets and legacy with his criminal system an tactics.

Dembele was never a great defender tbh but i don’t think that’s what we bought him for...it’s frustrating to watch him being misused. Valverde might aswell convert him into a right back

All tactics aside, Gaya would have been completely open in the penalty box if Dembele did not jet back.

If Semedo was RB, he would've been able to make it back in time too.

Nobody else in Barca beside Dembele and Semedo has enough speed.

To me it was a clear foul, Ousmane made a horrible diving tackle.

Yeah, and I can see why it by the books can be a pen, it makes sense, I'm just not used to see the ref actually give a penalty for a challenge like that.
I've even seen close to red cards being avoided because of "advantage"-play and not even yellow awarded afterwards..

But maybe I just don't understand it: If someone got to the header in the penalty-area and hammered it off the post - should he still award a penalty for the foul Dembele made, or what?

I guess the referee did not think there was enough advantage to Valencia to not to penalize Dembele/Barca.

The tackle got all flesh and meat, no balls at all. Dembele not used to tracking back at Semdo speed.

I still have high hopes for him. But choosing Dembele over Mbappe, when they were available for nearly identical prices, was a wrong decision from the board. I mean, had we invested the same time, resources, patience, mentoring etc. on Mbappe, it would have had proved much more sense in the long term for this club. We would have got ourselves someone to built team around at. No offence to dembele, he definitely has tremendous potential ,but, he seems to me like more of a supporting player, who can win you matches, but not the whole tournaments. When Messi leaves, we will have to look at someone else to fill his shoes, someone to spearhead the attack which would cost us another 150M+(that too, a Gamble), because I doubt dembele doing that.
