I didn't expect Dembele anyway, and it is the right decision, sending him in from the start on the one of the most difficult domestic games of the season, but Gomes, especially instead of Iniesta is a massive surprise. I'm gonna give Valverde the benefit of the doubt because of how his team selection panned out so far, but i'm worried about this, since we look so much different (in a bad way) when Iniesta is not in. If Coutinho were in the lineup already, it would've been different, but this way Messi again is the sole creative threat. The only thing that makes sense is that Ernesto plans on subbing in Iniesta and Dembele together around the 60th minute and go all in...just hoping we won't have to really go all in, if we'd be trailing by then.

Yip. It is very easy to understand.

Discuss todays line up as it is to be chosen today on what actually happened in last game.

Nope u are not addressing my point. The fact that u said Iniesta was benched this match bcos he looked tired the last match, means he shud have rested more just in case we need him against Sociedad.

Valverde is doing well with Dembele playing him with lower oppositions after injury. He will play with Espanyol for sure.

If they go all out in their pressing game, that midfield isn't going to be able to hold on to anything. And with so little creative threat or even pace in our attack, there's no reason why they shouldn't do that.

U yourself linked it to the performance last match but u said it is irrelevant. U arent solely discussing today's lineup.

I am discussing todays line up and what actually happened in last game.

If you want to say what Valverde may have done to change that then go ahead but is irrelevant to the situation and choosing team today as didnt happen.

I can understand leaving Dembouz out for this match.

Better to play it safe with the 442 with 4 midfielders that has served us so well this season.

I would have picked the same line-up EV did except have Iniesta for Gomes. But Gomes has been pretty decent lately so I can understand why EV went with him.

It makes sense to start a physically strong side vs La Real, doesn't it? After they run over our midfield year after year. Valverde knows how to win there.

Let's see how they do and whine afterwards if tactics don't work out. We have creativity in Iniesta and Dembélé on the bench and won't concede many goals if tactics don't work out offensively. Just relax guys.

True, makes sense

I dislike Gomes as much as the next guy but as of late he's managed to avoid being offensively bad even when he's not putting in the odd top quality performance so I don't mind him starting so much. Granted, if he goes back to being the Gomes we are all used to all of his performances up to now will go right out of the window when we realize that when he's needed he'll never be of any use to us. We could call it the Arda effect.
